What is the most current model DVR they offer? Motorola QIP 6416 7100 -2 small harddrive?

I just signed up for fios (after 5 years with Direct TV) and the boxes I got from the tech during the initial install are the Motorola QIP6416-2. That has to be the smallest dvr hard drive ever. How can you offer multi room dvr when the thing can't even hold enough programming for one room? I think it holds around 3 episodes of like 6 shows before it says full.

Right now I have exactly 28.5 hours of programming on it and it says its 84% full. I actually hit record on some old "Three Stoioges" episodes so there are 36 episodes of that. They are not HD (if it is, its fugazi hd anyway) and should be small files".

The rest of it is a couple episodes of Sons of Anarchy, and couple episodes of Mythbusters and a few Pawn Stars. And I haven't even transferred over my list of what I used to record (I believe I maxed out the (50 show limit) old Direct TV dvr. I had something like 500gb. I think I read the QIP6416-2 has 120gb ....which is something like 20 hours of HD programming from what Ive read.

So here is what the technician did (my landlord let him in before I moved in). He installed the QIP6416-2 in the living room which is basically the hard drive for the multi-room dvr. Its going to hold all the shows for all the other boxes.

In the bed room he installed a Motorola 7100-2 HD only box. It does not have a DVR in it and requires the 6416 to see the recorded shows. I have a second bedroom I have yet to get a box for it cause my office isn't set up yet. It will be some time before that happens so Im going with just the 6416-2 and the 7100-2.

What are the latest boxes offered by Fios?

What is the best box to serve as the master for a multi-room dvr set up? Are there any that offer the capability of adding my own external hard drive??

What is the best approach to getting the best boxes for my situation? There is a local Verizon/Fios store not too far from me. Should I just bring the 6416-2 in and tell them its junk?

I read somewhere there could be a $39.99 charge to get the latest and greatest HD DVR box. Is that true? **bleep** is that all about? If it is true, whats the #1 latest and greatest box that is FREE lol.

Thanks for any replies.

The 7100-2 are the newer boxes, but the 6416 is way old.  If you have a FIOS store try and trade it for a 7232.

Its really bad that FIOS is still occasionally using 6416.  According to the FIOS TV spokesman Twitter Joe Ambeault, Director of Product Mgmt, they are supposed to be being phased out.

Such a waste of time.  So basically, nothing gets resolved.

I had new FIOS service with whole house DVR installed Jan 13 2013 and I got the qip-6416-2 as the DVR.

It only hold 20 hours far short of the 40 promised.

Before I ordered FIOS the web site indicated I can add an external hard drive to my DVR.

But the QIP-6416 does not support ian external drive. So I contacted Verizon and they want $39 to upgrade the

DVR to a feature that it was supposed to have.

I've called and chatted several times to no avail. I requested to cancel since I'm still within 30 days and was on hold for 45 minutes.

So is Verizon reallly this bad?

Verizon wants me to pay $39 for something two days old that does not have a feature that their web site indicated it'd have.

Any hints. My previous cable company was Armstrong Cable which I loved. Too bad I can't move back to where I was.

Verizon has 6 models of DVR's, 1 of which is not offered at all anymore.

Motorola QIP 2708 (80gb SD only)

Motorola QIP 6416 (160gb)

Motorola QIP 7216-1 (160gb) (you can add ESATA external hard drive)

Motorola QIP 7216-2 (500gb) (you can add ESATA external hard drive)

Motorola QIP 7232 (500gb) (you can add ESATA external hard drive)

Cisco 435 (500 gb) (you can add ESATA external hard drive)

According to Motorola's Hard Drive Guide, they calculate recording hours in estimates (not all hd programs are equal not all SD programs are equal)

Motorola Guide
Table 1 – DVR Recording Time Guidelines
Internal Drive Estimated Recording Hours For:

Size                    Standard Digital Channels                               HDTV Channels
160 GB                   55 to 100                                                                  14 to 21
250 GB                   80 to 150                                                                  20 to 30
320 GB                 110 to 210                                                                  30 to 45
500 GB                 175 to 222                                                                  45 to 73

Hello,

The DVR models compatible with eSATA devices are the:

- Motorola QIP 7216

- Motorola QIP 7232

- Cisco 435

If you order a DVR online or over the phone, you'll get shipped whatever is available at the distribution facility at the time.

Hence, the DVR model you'll receive in the mail (or in this case, via installation) is not certain.

Verizon's Customer Service would mention ordering the upgraded DVR via the website

[https://www22.verizon.com/fiostv/myservices/members/DvrExpansion.aspx] if you specifically want the 500 GB DVR as that process guarantees the type of DVR that will be sent to you.

If you're determined to have an external hard drive connected to your DVR,

try contacting a local Verizon FiOS store and see if they can help you.  It depends on what they have in stock as well.

For a list of local FiOS stores:

http://www22.verizon.com/Support/Residential/TV/FiOSTV/General+Support/Account+Issues/QuestionsOne/8...

If you explain that the current model of DVR that you have does not support an external hard drive and you state your case reasonably, then perhaps you can get a resolution to this matter.

Good luck!

I too am making this discovery: Sub-standard drive size on installed MRDVR (QIP 6416). To add insult to injury the front panel has a rather obvious cosmetic defect.

I am in the processing of switching from DirecTV, where my HR22-100 has a 500GB drive. The tiny 160GB drive of the QIP 6416 seems quite ridiculous.

Anyone ever manage a free upgrade?

I too am within my 30 day period (day 2 at the moment).

Free upgrades are available (not necessarily to the latest model).  Plus they are currently doing a mandatory switching out of 6xxx if you have any service that includes HBO/CINEMAX, Spanish Packages, Ultimate and certain sports Channels.  THe 6xxx do not support Mpeg-4 which is or will be used with these packages.
