Our government will pay to have use of it.  After all, they read our E mail now!  I advise reading all the small print before signing up for anything.

Now that I have really looked at it. I view this as an EXTREME INVASION. It is worse than Google, and includes about any and every device you could possibly have tied to their network. (Subsystems)!

As a follow up to my comments about this topic i will now go into a new verizon tactic to try to get people to give up their personal info so that it can be used to advertise to them. Verizon will be notifying their customers soon about a program called "verizon selects" where they are going to offer you a coupon that you could use at a retailer in exchange for allowing them to target you as often as they can. This new program called verizon selects is part of a new data collecting initiative that is from verizon's precision marketing portfolio where the goal is to target as many customers however they can reach those customers through advertising directly to them. According to verizon they know exactly what it is that will make customers want to allow them to turn over all of their personal info so that they can be advertised to as often as they can where what verizon believes will get customers to allow such a thing to occur is that verizon will give them a coupon that could be used by the customer at a retailer. The dollar amount for the coupon has yet to be released or what retailer it could be used at but verizon is very confident that their customers will be willing to allow their private information to be given out that the coupon will be enough to entice their customers to allow the private info to be released. If it is for a retailer like best buy then that would be ironic since best buy has been promoting google tv for a while now where google tv it turns out is one of the groups who also applied for that detection zone type of program that verizon is now seeking to implement where anything that a customer says on a verizon owned cell phone, home phone or in room where there is fios tv will be entered in a database to find out how to best market advertisements to you which is something that google tv is trying to do too. Cameras and microphones in your home where it will be on your verizon owned equipment are on there way where if you think verizon is the only one who will be resorting to this type of tactic then you would be mistaken.

I could not agree with you more.  What happened to our inalienable rights?  I think that we should do everything in our power to have any such invasion of our privacy thwarted.  I, for one, would rather give up my TV than my right to privacy.

This should go as far as the supreme court.  At least that could slow it down enough for some of us to live out our lives in freedom.

We need to wke up before we follow in the footsteps of the rest of the world!!!

I do not know how garbage like this becomes legal. What a flagrant and unbelievable invasion of privacy this is. Not a big fan of government intervention but where is the government when natural disaster hit or some telecommunications company tries to spy on Americans. O yea the government is getting the spy information from these telecommunications companies. That is why they do nothing about it.

Everyone should be careful because I am sure that somewhere buried deep in the Verizon "Terms of Service" is/will be your agreement to being spied on.

Hi All-

I completely and totally understand the concern about this and why it's raising red flags with you. Here's the official blog post from Verizon about the topic:

There’s been some discussion today about a highly speculative news report from this morning, that no doubt is giving drive-time talk radio - not to mention tech blogs - something to discuss.  You can read the article that started all the talk here.  Verizon is a company that prizes innovation, and we take pride in the many innovators whose work is represented in our patents and patent applications.  That said, we don’t comment on pending patent applications; it’s all interesting, but as most folks know, a patent application is very different from a product or service or device actually coming to market any time soon.

Just as we appreciate effort in innovative ideas, Verizon also prizes its well-established track record of respecting its customers’ privacy and protecting their personal information.

I hope this helps clear a few things up and sets your mind at ease.

I, personally, am waiting for Verizon to tell us that such a device will never be used by Verizon.  But, then, why try to get a patent if you do not intend to use it to gain access to private conversations in your customers homes?

So, no this does not clear up anything for me!!!

Watch Glenn Beck's interview with Ray Kurzweil.  You won't have opt-in or opt-out options.

Not that I listen to Glenn Beck, but any provider that forced this would drive me away.  Perhaps back to OTA.
