I want to switch from overpriced Comcast to Verizon Fios and was just wondering if I have to cancel Comcast service first for FIOS to be installed. Thanks.

you do not HAVE to do so.....
I personally would wait, so as to not have down time...
but it totally up to you

You can cancel cable before having FIOS inatalled, but I would think that you do not have to.

FIOS will want to use existing coax in your house if it will handle the service, but I would wait for FIOS before I cut the cable. I had two RG-6 coax to each TV, one for antenna, and the other for Directv. I had Directv and FIOS running side by side for a while.

I certainly wish you the best of luck in switching from Comcast to Verizon as I'm switching from Verizon to Comcast. I'd rather pay a few more bucks per month and have DSL all the time vs not having it half the time. When I originally got Verizon over 5 years ago, it was great, but now, I've battled them for over a year because I do not have DSL half the time, yet have a bill to pay. Good luck to you with Verizon. I hope Fios is better.
Comcast does not provide DSL. I guess you mean a cable modem and cable internet access. If you had FIOS I can assure you that you would have it 99.9+% of the time. I have had FIOS for 5 years and have never lost it except when my house had no power. If you are in an area that has older phone lines or equipment, I guess it is possible that you could have issues with DSL. But Verizon always was very responsive when I had DSL issues prior to my upgrade to FIOS. I wish you luck with Comcast.
