WII wireless connection to Westell 327W

I have unsuccessfully attempted to establish a wireless connection to my Wii console from the 327W router/modem.

I am running Windows XP SP 1. I followed Verizon's instructions to make the connection, but have been unable to retrieve my SSID and WEP keys. Verizon instructs me to contact http://192.168.1.1 via my web browser. I have attempted this with both Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox, and receive a message that the address is not available. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

#1 Check the IP Address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, and DNS Servers on your computer.

#2 This means since you are on Windows XP:

a) Go to Start -> Run.

b) Type in cmd and press enter.

c) In the new window, called the command prompt, type in ipconfig /all and press enter.

#3 Compare the IP Address on your computer to one at http://whatismyip.com/

#4 If the IP Address on that site is on your computer, the modem is in bridge mode.

#5 If the IP Address on that site is NOT on your computer, with your web browser go to the default gateway (that you found) and log-in as need be.

Thanks for the effort, but no joy. I was able to find my IP address, but whatsmyip.com appears to be a shopping site. No info there.

OOPS! I must have mistyped . I clicked on your link, and found that the IP's match. So that means my modem is in "bridge mode"? How will that help me determine the SSID and WEP keys?

Ok.

Since the modem is in Bridge mode, I believe all wireless features are disabled in the router.

So to enable them, you need to reconfigure the router to handle the public IP.

While I am sure how to do this, I can try to help.

Are you in a PPPoE or DHCP area?

Hint/Cluie: It has to be DHCP OR PPPoE,  unless you paid for a Public Static IP (a business grade service).

If you are not sure, follow my directions.

#1 There is at least three ways on my Windows XP SP3 computer to get to the same screen.

a) Go to Start -> Connect to -> Show all connections

b)  Or you could go to Start -> Control Panel -> Network Connections.

c) OR you could go to Start -> Control Panel -> Network and Internet Connections -> Network Connections.

Hint/Clue: As noted on http://www.portforward.com/networking/static-xp.htm

they use the second method that I told you (step 5 and 6 as listed on that site).

#2 Once you are at that screen, on your computer is there anything about WAN Miniport (PPPoE)?

#1 When I went to http://www.westell.com/technical-support/technical-support.html

I found there is more than one 327w. Which 327w is it?

#2 Since you are using the Verizon Online Wan Miniport PPPOE, you have the user name and password to get online. Good, because you will need that info to reconfigure the modem combo to handle the public IP. 🙂

#3 If not, you must have that info to continue. For privacy/security reasons, do not post that user name or password.

#1 it is a 327W -15--06  From the info on the website, it appears to be a unit proprietary to Verizon.

#2 Yes, I have a name and password.

Further info -  The problem I have been having is that the Wii requires I enter a SSID and WEP key when setting up the wireless function. Verizon tells me to enter http://192.168.1.1 in my browser and go to that site. When I do that, I get a message that the site is not available.

#1Go to the network connection window.

#2 Right click on a NIC listed, but that is not the WAN Miniport (PPPoE) and select properties.

#3 In there, select Internet Protocol (TCP/P) and then properties.

#4 In there, select Use the following IP Adddress.

#5 Type in 192.168.1.3 as the IP Address, type in 255.255.255.0 as the subnet mask, and type in 192.168.1.1 as the default gateway and as the first DNS Server.

#6 Click Ok.

#7 Click Ok.

#8 With your web browser go to 192.168.1.1

#9 If requested for an user name and password type in admin.

#10 Take a screen shot of what you see.

a) Points to http://take-a-screenshot.org/

#11 When done taking a screen shot of the first screen that you see after you log-in to this modem, setup the computer to use DHCP (that same screen that you saw at steps 4 and 5 above).

#12 Upload the screen shot to site that allows uploading of pictures. For example http://tinypic.com/

OR Call Verizon and call them for help with configuring the router to handle the public IP.

Thanks for your attempts to help, but I think I am going to give up. This process seems to be more complicated than it needs to be. As I said in a couple of my earlier posts, I cannot connect tp 192.168.1.1. If I could, that would solve the problem, as the info I need is there. I looked further into the Wii documentation, and it states that in order to connect, I would have to change the 192.168.1.1 address. It really isn't that important that I get it connected. Although I am familiar with computers, I have never used a wireless network, so some of the info you provided, to me, sounds like a foriegn language.

Thanks again for your efforts.
