Cant access internet trhough router

Hello,

I can access the internet just fine when my pc is connected directly to the DSL modem(Westell 6110) but when I connect it to my Lynksys BEFSR41 it will not obtain an IP address. The router and PC are configured to obtain IP addresses automatically but on the router configuration status page, the WAN section just shows all 0's. I hit the "DHCP Release" button  then the "Renew" button but it always returns with 0's.,

My router and modem have been working fine for years. I was experiencing a extremely slow connection for an entire week. The Yahoo! main page would take an hour to load! I called Verizon tech support and they monitored my line and I think they reset something on their end because my connection is back to normal however I can only connect when my modem is directly connected to the pc.

Also, the DSL modem's "Internet" status light never turns on. Could this be why my router cannot get an IP assigned?

Thanks for the help.

I think, I know the answer.

#1 In your Linksys router go to Setup -> MAC Address Clone

The screen will look something like the screen that you see at

http://ui.linksys.com/files/BEFSR41/v4/1.04.05/Setup-MAClone.htm

#2 In your router, select enable.

#3 Enter in the MAC Address of your computer, and presss applyy

As need be, go to http://www.coffer.com/mac_info/ if you do not know how to find out what the MAC Address is.

Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

Thanks Partner.

It worked. This drove me crazy all weekend. Was on the phone for 1 hour with Verizon tech support. They recommended I buy a new router. Now if I only knew how it lost it in the first place.

Thank you!

You are welcome.

#1 As to why, that worked.

While your modem is a modem combo, I suspected it is in bridge mode.

Points to a FAQ explaining, how to put the Westell 6100 into bridge mode and if you have another router why to

http://www.dslreports.com/faq/13600

--

Since you modem is in bridge mode, if you need access to it without getting it out of bridge mode -

#1 I point to http://www.dslreports.com/faq/7267

#2 Follow the recommend way if you can.

a) If you do not have an Ethernet Stand alone Hub, I suspect that an Ethernet stand alone switch will work.

By stand alone hub or switch, not one built into a router.

Interesting reading. Thanks for the links.

Here is a bit of extra confusing info. Verizon tech support had me reset the modem to get me back online. I figured this reset lost some settings required by my router.

I tried getting into the modem configuration page by hooking it up direct to pc and going to the ip address noted in the modem's manual( I think it was 192.168.1.1)  but the configuration page on the modem would never come up.

I ran ipconfig /all and tried to get into the modem  through the listed gateway ip wich was something weird like 71.178.1.1(not real sure on the numbers anymore) but still could not gain access to the modems setup page.

After talking to another Verizon tech I was informed that the 6110 modem does not have a user acceressible setup page! The manual on the install CD never mentions this! Only the 6100 has a setup page. The 6110 is as I now know after reading your links is a simple bridge modem.

Than.

Upon reflection, your modem is not a modem combo - opps.

For future reference: If you need the modem status from the modem, this is what you need to do.

#1 Download the software from http://www.dslreports.com/faq/7553

#2 Disconnect your computer from the router.

#3 On your computer setup a Static with these settings...

IP: 192.168.1.6

Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

#4 Connect your computer to the modem.

#5 Install the software from the FAQ in this post.

#6 Press CTRL-ALT-F7 (meaning at the same time).

#7 Go to the DSL tab.

-

After getting the info from that screen, to get back online...

#1 Disconnect your computer from the modem.

#2 Set your computer to use DHCP.

#3 Connect your computer to the router.

#4 Release and renew your IP Address on your computer, as need be.
