DNS Servers

Please can anyone advise. We have a High speed internet service using an Actiontec GT704WG which has worked fine for several years using the default DNS servers of 68.238.xxx.xx and 68.238.xx.xx.

Recently these have become VERY unreleable and often do not respond to requests (as can be seen in the modem log).

When running any benchmark tests from grc.com, only one server at most is ever available and when neither is available we get errors.

When we first contacted Verizon, we were told that we didn't have any problems, which by the time we got through and the tests had been run, of course we hadn't.

We have since done our own tests and re-reported the problem as one regarding the defaulting DNS servers and this morning, we have been told (by Verizon) to use 4.2.2.2 and 4.2.2.1. This gave us further problems and when we ran tests, they confirm that these DNS servers do not respond.

Can anyone out there advise as to the DNS servers we should be using to return to our former reliability?

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for your reply. We had already found this list and can only assume that it is out of date as we were told yesterday that our currently assigned DNS servers are active and they do not appear on the list. Also, the addresses in the 4.2 range that we were given yesterday are dead.

Oops, sorry - just seen that our original post was edited so you wouldn't know what our assigned addresses are anyway. I guess that we're not going to get very far with the status of these addresses if no-one knows what they are- so perhaps Verizon can reply - please!!!!

You can give OpenDNS a try at:

208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220

#1 You did test correctly with the DNS Tester? Here is a quick quote from it...

***

One VERY IMPORTANT usage note before you begin:

To obtain the most accurate results, the DNS Benchmark should be the only program actively using your network connection while it is performing the benchmark testing. Active web surfing or file downloading will almost certainly have a profound impact on your network's DNS access performance. (The degree of such impact can be useful to know as well, but that is a different test than "quiet network" DNS access.) Therefore, for the most accurate results, please suspend all other network activity for the few minutes required to run the benchmarking test.

#2 I also point you to the post by "Kerry Liles" said at "news.grc.com" in the "grc.techtalk" area in a thread titled

Quick quote

Many ISPs cannot configure and run a proper dns service. Although it is not
an easy task, it is possible to do so
