DSL Questions... problems... and issues

Okay so I am totally new to DSL and I was helping a friends mom setup a new computer. Her old computer was on DSL but the mother board died and no way for me to check the configuration. Plus her old system was old and when it was set up had used a DSL disk from Verizon. So I set this new system up and can but can't connect to the internet. I can hit the front page of yahoo.com but not the sports link inside of the page. I can hit google, enter a search and get results but click the links and it just spins. Verizons answer is the dsl modem is working fine so pay us and we will help. Not what I consider fair. So I brought this system to my house, plugged it into my cable modem/network and it worked fine. Worked with techs for over 4 hours and they say the modem works. Is it possible the modem does not work with Windows 7 correctly? It is possible I don't have something setup, which I will admit to, because I don't have a clue when it comes to DSL, but working with the techs, I know the modem is set for the PPPoE and they said the computer does not need any special setup. Please help... I spent like 6 or 7 hours on this and it is still broke...

Thanks

All that's needed is to plug it in and go. Sounds like you just need to update the NIC drivers on the system. Pretty common problem, easy to solve.

I am sorry, I have a Westtel Model 6100 Modem for DSL. It is a brand new HP system not sure the model, but from Best Buy. I placed this system on a cable modem network and I did not have a single problem. It connected up fine and I could access all the internet pages I wanted.

The first step is to make sure the NIC and Modem/Router actually work.

enter http://192.168.1.1 into your browser, and you should get the 'welcome screen' the router.

If you get it, it is a safe bet the Ethernet connection and NIC drivers are present and working.

If not, then you need to trouble shoot the Ethernet connection. There are usually two LED's each connector, one for connection, the other for activity. If it is working and connected at both ends, one LED should be on at all times. If not, go to Control panel>system>hardware>devicemanager and click on the network adapters. Take a look what is shows you.  If there is yellow triangle, or ? next to the NIC adapter, there is a problem with the adapter. It is either broken, or it needs a driver.

However since you say it all works perfectly with a cable modem, that suggests there is an issue with the DSL modem. My bet would be on the firewall in the modem/router.

Your probably want to log into the modem/router. Usually the ID is admin, and the password is password, passwd, or passwd2.

If you cannot log in, try the router serial number (from the nameplate) as the password. If that doesn't work, you may want to reset the modem/router (there is a reset button, and there should be some sort of instruction book that came with the router on how to reset it to factory defaults, which will also tell you the default userid and password information.

Once you are logged in,  you want to check the firewall settings on the router. My guess is they are set to something very high, which is effectively blocking your access to most of the Internet. You probably want something more along the lines of medium (typical) security.

Good luck
