DSL slow, router needs frequent resets.

Hi everyone. My DSL has been dialup slow the last week and a half or so, and I'm not sure what the issue is. Both speedtest.net and Verizon's own speedtester show speeds less than 2mbps, while my router shows a downstream speed of 7304 kbps. I'm paying for the 7.1-15mbps tier, though I haven't ever gotten speeds like that (which is another issue altogether.)

I also have to frequently reset my router to factory settings. At least a couple times a week I'll completely lose my connection, and the only way to get it back is to reset to factory settings.

It's only me and my girlfriend using the wifi. I have it set to WPA2, and we only ever have 5 items connected (two laptops, two smartphones, and a PS3.) I've got no idea if this is a router issue, or an ongoing network issue.

Any ideas?

Thanks, but I'm not sure how that's supposed to help. I'm not even at the same address that I was when I posted that, and if you read my OP, I said that this issue has just started in the last couple weeks.

I am having the same problem. About two weeks ago my bandwidth has dropped from 6.5Mbps to 2.9Mbps (down). Transceiver stats indicate 7000Mbps down. My upload is not affected however. I have run various bandwidth tests on a completely clean machine, have reset the modem  a dozen times and connect it straight to the computer. I am going to give a call this weekend and see if they can send out a new modem, this is ridiculous.

Looks like your line is out of sync, but you could also be suffering from congestion. Please do the following:

Click on Status > Select DSL (WAN) Status. You should find a page giving information such as your DSL Connection's attenuation, error counts, the last time the line retrained, along with a full listing of speed and specs. IF you could post up this information, that would be great.

@adf: You may want to consider starting your own thread so we can troubleshoot this issue a bit further without confustion 🙂

So we do in fact have an issue with noise here. Your downstream margin is awful. The upstream looks good, but it seems that the upstream is having problems intermittently.

Do you have a landline from Verizon? If yes, do you occasionally hear noise or other static on the line, especially around times where the DSL connection is slow or misbehaving? If so, you will want to troubleshoot this noise with Verizon first. Work with Voice repair during a time the static is present from another phone, and have a tech come out to check the problem out.

If the noise on your phone line is consistent, you will want to check your service out at the NID. Here's some information as to what a NID is: http://www.dslreports.com/faq/1317 . Taking both a Corded phone capable of pulling power from the phone line and connecting up to the NID will help identify whether a problem exists on Verizon's end, or on your end.
If noise disappears when the modem is turned off, you either have bad wiring somewhere between your home and the CO, or you have a damaged/incorrectly installed filter in your home.

Another thing that could be done to help troubleshoot intermittent issues such as these, is to get a Homerun installed for your DSL if you don't already have one. This dedicates a single jack in your home for DSL, and then filters out the rest of your home for DSL Service. This allows you to eliminate the Microfilters usually plugged into the phone jacks, and allows for your modem to get a better, less noisy signal that is otherwise generated from Microfilters and wiring. Verizon can install one for you, often free of charge when you are having issues like these.

I do have a landline, but I don't use it. I'm in college, and using a landline just doesn't make sense when I have a cell. I don't even actually have a landline capable phone, but I'm sure I can pick one up from Goodwill for cheap. I'll give that a try. When I do I'll also try the NID, though I like in an apartment building, and I'm not entirely sure where it'd be. Probably somewhere around the power boxes, right?

In most apartments, the NID is often outside, or in a common area found in the basement. They will be loaded usually near the electrical meter, electrical panel, or the building's electrical ground. If you are not able to locate the NID, simply call Verizon and let then know you don't have access to it, and troubleshooting can resume based on what they have to work with.
