Download speeds have dropped in past few days
BobEM
Enthusiast - Level 2

I am generally happy with my DSL speeds (i.e. I can watch YouTube without problems) but have doubted that I'm getting anything close to the speeds of my plan (High Speed Internet Extra plan). I can live with that.

Until about five days ago, my download speed has been in the 280 - 350 kbps which was fine. But in recent days my download speed has been in the neighborhood of 150kbps and has never been above 180kbps.

I thought it might be network congestion, but it has remained in that range regardless of the day or time of day/night.

I've reset the modem repeatedly (unplugging it), run the Verizon Optimize feature, checked for malware, etc, cleared cache and cookies, and cleared space on my hard drive.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

TIA.

OK, That looks to be our problem then. Your line is running at an optimized rate. You'll need someone in Verizon to set your speed back to 3Mbps. While you're also at it, you should consider connecting your modem to the NID to see if we can get some better statistics. If they improve we might be able to get you a 5 or 7Mbps connection.

#1 Visit http://www.giganews.com/line_info.html and post up the Traceroute the page shows, if you wish. Be aware that the final hop (bottom-most line of the trace)  might contain a hop with your IP address in it. Remove that line. What I'm looking for is a line that mentions "ERX" in it's name towards the end. If for some reason the trace does not complete (two lines full of Stars), keep the trace route intact.

#2 Can you provide the Transceiver Statistics from your modem?

If you don't know how to get that info:

a) What is the brand and model of your modem?

b) If you have a RJ-45 WAN port router connected to the modem: What is the brand and model of that RJ-45 WAN port router?

#3 Even If you know how to get the Transceiver Statistics from your modem and you have a RJ-45 WAN port router connected to the modem: What is the brand and model of that RJ-45 WAN port router?

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

There were no rows of stars in the traceroute.

The router is the original Actiontec GT704WGB branded as Verizon.

There is no RJ-45 WAN port router connected to the modem.

Your modem shows.

Attainable Rate (Downstream/Upstream): 5880 / 1246 Kbps which is 5.880Mbps / 1.246Mbps, and you are not getting anything close to that based on your posted speeds. I would say there are some issues somewhere.

Can you run a speed test from http://my.verizon.com/micro/speedtest/broadband/

Then post your details that are displayed under "see more details". Your DSL speeds will not be as high as my FiOS speeds shown, but the information may be helpful. Smiley Happy

Also your trace route did not look bad, as far as latency. When you post your results, be sure to remove your IP for privacy. I will put ###.###.###.### for mine. Bits and bytes always get confused, and something looks off here.

Giganews is known for hosting multipart binaries that are copy written works. So be careful.

If Verizon is already starting to throttle traffic to and from Giganews, that sort of blows net neutrality out of the water. Guilty until innocent as discussed in the thread linked below.

Verizon stopped running news servers a few years back, and was only carrying the support feeds until after this Community came on line.

Test your speed as requested in my previous post, and also read the information in the thread linked below.

Many thanks for your replies.

Oddness: I thought "giganews" was part of the standard test results. I have never used the giganews service.

Interesting reading regarding the throttling. For the record, long ago I tried torrents without success mostly out of curiosity and have since stayed away from that area of the Net.

Since this is the speed obtained from the Verizon Speed Test Site I would be very displeased!

This is not even close to 1.5/768 Mbps. and you are paying for a "High Speed Internet Extra plan".

But it depends on which plan you have. Most show a speed range. If you are not happy with the performange for the range you are paying for, I would contact tech support directly. Here are the ranges I see. High Speed Internet, and High Speed Internet Enhanced ~.

http://www22.verizon.com/home/highspeedinternet/#plans

Your Broadband Speed Test

Download speed: 0.931 Mbps
Upload speed: 0.541 Mbps

Not knowing what exact plan you have, this is the best advice I can provide. Before FiOS, I was at the end of the line, and could only get 1.5/768 if lucky.

I find it strange that the modem is not reporting a speed in the DSL Statistics. I'd like to know what that is so we can see if this is a sync issue or not. They should be getting reported by the modem. If they're not in the DSL Stats, the speed should show up in the main screen of the modem. Otherwise, we can have Verizon get the speed the line is trained at.

The line I would expect to have better statistics than that for that short of a line on ADSL2+ as well.
