E-mail server down? No notice of port 587 or newsgroup changes

After 3 PM or so today I could not send or recieve e-mail via thunderbird - it keeps timing out.

I checked newsgroups where I found about the discontinuance of them and also about the port 587. Changed my outgoing port to 587 - still timed out.

Put it back to 25 and it still timed out also.

Is there a problem?

Netmail.verizon.net works fine.
