New Actiontec Wireless Won't Connect to Internet

I just purchased a 'Verizon' Actiontec GT704-WG Gateway to replace my old Westell DSL modem.  The Westell was working fine, just wanted wireless.  I installed the new gateway without any problems, up until trying to connect to the internet.  Just won't work...  The Power, DSL, and Ethernet lights all are green, but the Internet light stays dark.  No connection.  The modem status shows my DSL status as connected; but ISP status as 'connecting'.  I verified that PPPoE protocol is selected on the gateway, and I entered my Verizon username and password in the Quick Setup.  I've powered down and rebooted several times with the same result.

I've now hooked up the Westell again and it works fine, not connection problems.

Any hints on other things I can try to get the gateway connected?  The Verizon folks just haven't been a whole lot of help.

Thanks.

#1 What was the model of that Westell?

#2 What did you power and reboot?

a) The computer, the router?

#3 How long did you have the power turned off, before turning the power back on again?

It looks as if the DSL connection has been made if the internet light is steady. If the system still says connecting, then it is looking for an IP address or not talking to the internet. In set up wizzard you must select this. After enterning your PPPOE name and password.

If PPPoE was selected in step 5, select the IP type (“Dynamic IP-DHCP

[Default]” or “Single Static IP Address”).

Or supply the static address supplied for your internet, if Verizon supplied you with one. Usually static addresses are only given to business users.

I would try a reset to factory default and run the setup wizzard again. Here is the manual if you do not have it supplied with the router.

  • My Westell is a Model 2110
  • I have tried several power up/reboot options:  turning off just the modem and waiting 5 minutes; turning off just the computer and waiting; turning off both; and powering back up in different order.
  • also tried all of this on a different day

Each time I had exactly the same result.  Connects to the DSL, but no internet.  I can plug the Westell back in and everything works normally.

Thanks.

Your subject states that the wireless will not connect. Does it work with a hardwired connection.

Have you reset the modem to factory default?

Have you run the connection wizard in the modem to make the connection?

Did you set the modem to use a dynamic IP from PPPOE when configuring the connection?

Follow the instuctions regarding resetting the modem to factory defaults. Then set up the modem following the instructions found on this page. Here are trouble shooting guides that may help you.

Also this page has many details on setting up the network. Wireless and hardwired.

Another post for account activation. You can run through this procedure to reinstall connection software that may help you.

I have to wonder if your Westell modem is buggy...

--

For example, as addressed at

DSLR (dslreports.com) Forums » US Telco Support » Verizon » Verizon Online DSL » [modem/router] Using Dlink DSL-2320B

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r19908778-modemrouter-Using-Dlink-DSL2320B

Some Westells are buggy, and the user must turn it off and wait at least 24 hours before replacing it (Westell D90-327) with a Dlink DSL-2320B.
