Securing my Westell 327W

I'm trying to secure my Westell 327W.

I have tried resetting my router. Then logging on to 192.186.1.1. I enter the User name "admin" and the password "password". I'm then taken to this page http://192.168.1.1/edit_user_settings.htm. I attempt to change the username and password, it asks if I'm sure I want to do that, I say yes. Then it takes me back again to the same page at http://192.168.1.1/edit_user_settings.htm. If I try to click on any of the other tabs it just continues to take me to the same page.

I am not trying to use the word "password" as my password either. I know sometimes these things don't let you do that.

I am using a Macbook with OS X 10.5.8, and Safari as my web browser.

What do I do?

There are a couple of things you can try.

There are sometimes issues with that GUI And browsers other than IE, so you may have to try to download IE for mac and then try it again,  possibly firefox.

as a first step though, you would probably want to hard reset the router, meaning hold in the reset button for 20 seconds and then let it re-gain sync.    then try the same steps you did before again.  if that doesn't work then try the alternate browser, and if that doesn't work I would reach out to the DSL support technicians, there may be something odd with the router.

#1 When you tried to change the password, you typed it in two times?

Password, confirm password?

#2 And you typed in the same password, both times?

#3 :

a) I know that you are not on a Windows computer, but if you were...

As need be: Type the password into Notepad, then copy the password from Notepad into the router's screens where it ask for the new password.

b) ** Do that when no else is watching you, to the best of your knowledge **.

If malware has already infected the computer, it is already to late. The malware could record all of the keys that are typed on it.

#4 Since you are not on Windows, use the program of your choice - But not a web browser.

If I typed my desired password into the web browser's address bar and pressed the wrong key, by accident, that data would be sent to someone else over the net. So, not a good idea...
