Usually the dsl comes to your house on the same pair of wires as your dial tone. You can use the phone any time you want, it has nothing to do with the dsl. If the dsl goes out when you use the phone, that is the dsl light starts to blink, you probably have something in your house not filtered. Everything on your phone line needs a filter except the dsl modem. All alarms, faxes, TV boxes, meter readers etc. have to be filtered.

DSL works on a really low bandwidth on your fone line ( i believe the fc for the DSL is around 2khz )
the phone works above that frequency (i think fones go up to about 12khz )
it is possible to have DSL and Phone line on the same line, but you will need a splitter and a hi pass filter.
the hi pass filter is a simple device ( a resistor and a capacitor) that make it so only the phone signal comes out of the line.
