Unable to connect to news.verizon.net

I've set up newsgroup service via Outlook Express dozens of times on various ISPs, so I am confident I'm doing EVERYthing right. I'm well aware of the big-8 limitation, but Verizon isn't letting my news client (OE) connect at all. That SUCKS!

I'm using my correct username and password. This is the error that OE gives me every single time:

   Account: news.verizon.net
   Server: news.verizon.net
   User name: {edited for privacy}
   Protocol: NNTP
   Port: 119
   Secure(SSL): 0
   Code: 800ccc0e

I've tried it using my username alone, and tried it again followed by "@verizon.net" (which I believe is wrong), and neither succeeds.

I've tried it with the "Use secure password authentication" unchecked, and tried it again with it checked (which I believe is wrong), and neither succeeds.

I tried it several times yesterday and again today, but I can't get in.

Any help appreciated.

As others have pointed out Verizon no longer offers News. My advice is to sign up with someone like www.teranews.com.

For a one time fee of $4 you can access their servers (and post) up to 50mb/day. They are NOT restricted to the 'Big 8' News categories either. Not sure how many newsgroups they have, but it is in the tens of thousands.

While they offer a totally free server, I was never able to use it successfully, so I paid the $4, and I have very little trouble with that news server.

That was the best deal I found for casual users. If you want more than 50mb/day, there are commercial plans from several companies that start at about $8/month and go up from there, depending upon monthly download volume.
