Uploads causing massive amounts of latency.

I'm back again with more issues. Internet is still shutting off like usual but now im stuck with uploads either being the source of shutting off our internet or bringing it to a complete crawl. Everyone in the house uses dropbox regularly and does other forms of uploads which causes the download to drop like a rock.

This only occurs when uploading. As soon as any uploads are finished, the speed picks up and everything is fine.

Router:
ActionTec GT784WN-VZ-1.1.18

Speeds:
10mbps / 1mbps

Trace Routes:

All trace routes I do immediately plog up when it leaves my router. This suggests that there is an issue with the lines or something on verizons end.

What is 10.14.18.1 (second hop in both traceroutes)? That's not a valid public IP, and looks like the source of your issue...

I noticed that unusual IP too but just assumed it was the DSLAM box up the street. I changed my router to the previous Netgear dgn2200v3 and still have that 10.14.18.1 address when doing tracerts. What do you believe that number could be?

That 10.x.x.x IP address is in fact your line's location in the router at the DSLAM.

It's pretty normal for uploads to max out the connection; happens to me also.  Were those tracerts during the uploads or before?

I think with the Actiontec there is a way to control the upload QOS, but I don't know entirely how it works.  It's on the "Advacnced Setup" tab, then click on "QoS Upstream" on the left column.

Well thats good to know that its' for the DSLAM. Yea those traceroutes were during an upload to youtube. The actiontec router did have a upload QOS but it was really difficult to setup. After switching back to my netgear router, I was able to turn on Uplink bandwidth and set it to 700kbps. The total uplink was 1000kbps. Having the 300kbps of space will be good.

Could my Attenuation levels be cuasing some of the issues too? They're on the higher side.

ADSL Link | Downstream | Upstream
Link Rate | 10912Kbps | 1000 Kbps
Line Attenuation | 43.5 dB | 24.8 dB
Noise Margin | 7.3 dB | 9.9 dB

Wow!  I'm honestly surprirsed you don't have more problems with that, that's a pretty high sync rate for that attenuation.  DSL stops being stable when your SNR drops to 6 or below.  The higher the sync rate, the lower the SNR at a particular attenuation.

But, as long as it's not dropping out, the SNR and attenuation aren't a problem.

It's not really the DSL but just a fact of the way the Internet works - I've had the same thing happen to me on both DSL and cable when downloading large files (like game updates), the ping skyrockets to over 2000 ms when the connection is maxed out, whether it's upload or download.

If you're doing large uploads, maybe set them to go overnight when no one else is online?

To stop the latency issues, you really have two options as others alluded to. You will need to utilize QoS/traffic shaping in order to control the rate at which data is being sent, and buffered up at your router. The second option is, you can try to throw more bandwidth at the problem, which is really only an option on Fiber.

If FiOS is around and you find upload being a problem, consider getting the 25/25 package. It may still suffer from the latency bit when saturated, but the uploads going that much faster make that saturation far less painful.
