What speed am I paying for?

I don't really have any issues with my DSL, but I ran a speed check for fun, and the results look pathetic.  How can I check what speeds I am actually paying for?  I have been all over the Verizon website, and no where does it tell me what I am supposed to expect for upload/download speed.  If I am paying for way more than what I am getting, I want to know about it.

Also, A while back I tried the connection optimizer, and all it did was mess up my computer so bad I had to call in for service.

Keep in mind that all Verizon provides is the 'entry' and 'exit' ramp to the internet. Most speed tests are of limited use because they are subject to network congestion at various points between you and the destination. IIRC, Verizon currently offers 4 'tiers' of DSL service.

up to ~1 mgbs/384kbs

up to ~3 mbps/768kbps

up to ~7 mbsp/768kbs (requires you be fairly close to the Central Office)

up to ~11 mbps/??  (only in some markets).

The best way to tell you connection speed is to look a the transceiver statistics on your modem/router, which will tell you what connection speed you have with the Central Office, signal margins, and loss figures on the link. The speeds the transceiver gets represent the maximum possible downlink/uplink speeds your connection supports.

Generally most computers will gain little from Verizon's network optimization tool if you are running in the 3mbps tier (which is where most people are). The Optimizer  generally doesn't work with Windows 7/Vista because these operating systems dynamically tune the network settings based upon actual use.

Optimization become much more of an issue when you start talking about FiOS speeds, which in some markets are up to 300mbps.

Hmmm.... transceiver statistics... sounds technical!  I took a peek around and couldn't find any setting with that phrase.  Do you mean simply the performance of the modem?  Or the "LAN_DSL Connection Status"?  Right now, that screen says 179,489 sent/289510 sent.  Speed 100Mbps.

You need to log into the modem/router to see the transceiver statistics.

Hey, that is a nifty page I've never seen before!  OK, it says DSL Connect Rate (Down/Up)    3360 KBits/Sec by 864 KBits/Sec

With that sync you technically have the "Up to 3Mbps/768kbps" package. Under Verizon's new plans, which you technically fall under if I'm mistaken that's anything from 1.1Mbps/384kbps to 15Mbps/1Mbps.
