Will faster DSL ever be in my area?

I live in the zip code of 18032 and the fastest internet I can get from Verizon is the 3m DSL.  I do more using the internet then most and would like to have an option to get a faster speed.  I don't necesserily need FIOS, but maybe 10m or something.  I'd switch to another company but charging me extra just because I don't subscripbe to their cable tv makes me even crankier.

DSL technology changes over time. When DSL was first introduced in the 1990's, the maximum distance from the Central Office was under 2 miles of cable, and the maximum speed was considerably lower. The current 'top of the line' product, ADSL2+ can in theory  provide up to 24mbps.

Anyway, this a link that compares ADSL to ADSL2+ speeds against various distances from the Central Office Equipment.

The distances are in Meters, 1600 meters~1 mile

Having said that, I doubt that Verizon plans to make further investments in copper, and Central Office equipment for copper unless they are ordered to do so. Since DSL is not a tariffed service, at this time there is no regulatory body with authority to order Verizon (or anyone else) to upgrade their DSL products, so don't hold you breath waiting for this to happen.

Verizon would much rather put the investment into FiOS, which is capable of far higher speeds over far longer distances than DSL.

In addition FiOS is pretty much what is offered, is pretty much what you get. I used to have 3mbps DSL, and it was a rare day I could get the full 3.0Mbps, and I was never ever able to get the full 768kbps uplink. If I could hear thunder, my DSL was down, and in rainy weather, I lost about 500Kbps from the downlink speed.  None of that happens with FiOS. I have a 20/5 Mbps connection, and it usually tests at about 19/6 mbps.

Currently the fastest DSL anywere is 7Mb I believe. But you have to be very close to the CO to get that.

As JMW1950 said, DSL it not likely to be advanced. It is a dying technology. Verizon is focusing on Fios. And most other providers are either starting to head toward a fiber system or expanding the cable docsis system. DSL is likely to go the way of dial up.
