My 768k dsl plan has been great, decent speed and worked for a long time. until 3 days ago. was out one day. on the next day but very slow. download speeds about 400kbps. was getting nearly double that until then. 3 days now its slower than its ever been. why?
only thing different on my end Is I updated from Mac OS 10.4.11 to 10.6 snow leopard. I changed no hardware or software settings.
of course I had a filter on the line just before the wall jack, which online tech said to remove I did not need it. so I removed it. still downloads are slower than it was 3 days ago. all web pages load slow now. was working fine.
1. tech support. calling the phone system is a joke. you cant get a person on the phone. you speak to a computer, tell it ABC option, and it goes to something you did not ask for. so It cant understand what you want. Worthless. why am I forced to speak to a system that dont understand what Im asking for?
2. the one time I got a person on the phone. heavy accent. broken english. THAT does me no good when I cant understand them.
3. then one tech says "you use a mac right". yes. sorry we are trained in windows not macs cant help you.
two phone calls and 3 online chats later, I have a download speed of 400 kbps and still NO help from anyone. NO help in sight. I dont know what to do next?

If it all started after you made a MAJOR system change, such as upgrading your Operating System.... I would have to say, that is where you problem lies....
try this http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/broadbandtuner10.html
If wireless, try hard wired....
If you have another Mac or PC... try that
if you have not already rebooted/reset your reouter/modem, do so.
best o luck

its hard wired. I only have the basic dsl. 768k. (they call it high speed internet, yeah right). not super fast to begin with. But my downloads were nearing 1 kbps.
now I'm lucky if I hit 430 kbps on download speeds. I installed the program you linked do. guess it does something behind the scenes. I don't see any interface for me to interact with.
perhaps the modem went bad? I dunno what to do next. cant get a real person to speak too that knows what their doing. And knows macs.
thanks for your tips. we did all the resetting/rebooting. no luck

again, with it coinciding with a change on your end... that is more than likely the cause and reason to the problem...
Have a friend or neighbor or coworker or family member brings a windows laptop over, plug it up and run a speed test at www.speakeasy.net/speedtest click the closest server, run the test
if they are getting proper speeds, you know the issue is the mac, and no need to contact Verizon tech support again, regarding the issue... if they have the same speeds as the mac, call tech support with the PC in place, and see what can be done

seems to work great now. over 1000 kbps like it use to be. did a little tweaking on my mac. dont know if that helped or not.
thanks for your tips though. appreciate it 🙂
I dont' know how many verizon customers use macs, but since verizon is a BIG company with BIG money, you think they would do some mac training for its support agents. If 500 customers used macs, that certainly enough customers to try to keep. It would warrant some mac training, at least the basics. IMHO of course.

There was a dedicated mac team, for DSL support... years ago....
I do not know if there still is... probably not
next time you call DSL tech support , call this number, 1 866 268 4630 and see if the Mac option still gets you to a Mac person or not.... i believ it is option 1, 1, 1, 2.... but listen to the prompts, in case it has changed
glad it is working for you, now
have a good one

Unfortunately there is no longer a dedicated MAC support team.
