continuous connection

I have a westell 6100 modem ,run a firefox browser and run windows xp.When I open my browser I do not have a connection to the internet, I have to go to network connections to manually open a connection.Any help would be greatly appreciated.

r u connecting trough a broadband connection on the NETWORK CONNECTIONS? if that's how you usually connects / get connected your modem is already bad.

It sounds like you are using a PPPoE dialer from network connections. You need to setup the 6100 to do the authentication for you.
