only 10 Mb port speed on Westel versalink 327w

I have 4 computers hooked into the ethernet ports of the above model. I get eh same results on all 4. When I try and set the NIC cards to Auto config or 100 Mb spped, there are no lights on the westel and they show disconnected. When I set the speed of the NIC's to 10 Mb half / Full, I get a light on the Westel and there is connectivity. I have tried new linksys NIC cards as well as 3Com cards and get the same results.  When I connect the NIC's to a Linksys workgroup switch, I am able to get the full 100 Mb speed.

Why is the Westel limiting me to 10 Mb when the ports are supposed to be 10/100 Mb?

Thanks for any info and help you can provide.

Respectfully,

Carl

I wouldn't bet the Westel is actually limiting you to 10mb/sec. The Westel does have 10/100 ports on it. However it isn't quite that simple. When the connection is established the two devices talk to each other to negotiate what speed and features are available. For some reason the negotiation is failing, and from here, it is impossible to tell whose fault it is. Because the negotiation fails, you end up without an autoconfiguration connection.

One thing you might try is making the ethernet connection, and then unplugging the Westel for 30 seconds or so, and plugging it back in. No guarantees however. It may also be a problem with your specific unit.

Good luck.
