trying to set up router

I am so aggravated that I have wasted 6 hours of my life on this.  I need some basic information in order to set up my new router.  I have Verizon DSL but don't know where to find the most basic info.  What I need to know is:

What protocol does Verizon use for establishing a connection?  PPoE? Dynamic? or Static?

If PPoE:

What is the account name?

What is the domain name?

What is the DNS address of the primary server?

What is the DNS address of the secondary server? (if there is one)

If Dynamic:

What is the account name?

What is the domain name?

What is the DNS address of the primary server?

What is the DNS address of the secondary server? (if there is one)

If Static:

What is the DNS address of the primary server?

What is the DNS address of the secondary server? (if there is one)

What  is the isp service name--if a service name is required?

What is the isp host name?

What is the isp service name?

If anyone can help me with this, I would GREATLY appreciate it!!  Thank you.

Verizon uses all three, depending on what you've ordered and where you live. Most likely you are using PPPoE connectivity. The ONLY thing you should need to fill into your router is the Username and Password. In most areas that can be anything, but they are typically the Username and Password for the Master account on your DSL line (What you use to log into Verizon mail and change Verizon account settings). IP addresses, DNS servers, and Default Gateways will be obtained automatically when PPPoE connectivity is established. Keep in mind, using PPPoE on your router requires your DSL modem to be bridged!

Your DSL modem if you log into it at http://192.168.1.1/ while directly connected to it will tell you what protocol your DSL line is set to use. It will say PPP/PPPoE as the protocol, or "Routed Bridge" for DHCP.

Also as a tip, if you do not wish to use the DNS servers Verizon uses, choose from any of the IPs below to use instead. These will not redirect you to some Verizon-branded search page if a site is not found:

4.2.2.1

4.2.2.2

4.2.2.3

4.2.2.4

4.2.2.5

4.2.2.6

8.8.4.4

8.8.8.8

If you need to bridge your DSL modem, you can do so by logging into http://192.168.1.1/ while directly connected to the modem and choosing My Network. From there, clicking Network Connections and choosing the DSL network will take you to another settings page. Edit the option located under "VC Settings" to use "Bridge" with "Bridge" mode instead of PPPoE, then save and allow the modem to reboot. From here your router will be able to use PPPoE connectivity.

I cannot access settings.  It asks for my user name and password, but they don't work.  Is there a default username and password for the modem?  It does not accept my Verizon username or password and I don't recall setting up the modem with a separate password.

I cannot do much with the modem settings because it keeps asking me for a modem username and password.  It does not accept my verizon login id and password, and I don't remember setting up a separate password for my modem.  Is there a default username and password?

If the modem isn't using your Verizon Username or Password, try the following:

admin/password

admin/password1

admin/admin

admin/admin1

Failing that, give the modem a reset by holding down the rear reset button for about 30 seconds. From there, let the modem reboot and reconnect. Log into http://192.168.1.1/ using admin/password , if prompted and then reset the password. From there, visit http://192.168.1.1/verizon/redirect.html or http://192.168.1.1/verizon/redirect and select Disable on the button found in that page to shut off the Walled Garden. Next, click on the "My Network" page, choose Network Connections from the Left navigation and then edit the Broadband Connection option. Under VC settings, edit the VC Setting titled "0/35." In the edit screen, choose Bridge mode instead of PPPoE, and make sure the modem is using Bridge mode on the drop-down box below that. Lastly, save the settings and let the modem reboot if it needs to. When it applies the settings, go back to "My Network" and then to the Local Area Network profile. Disable the Private LAN DHCP server and click Apply. Allow the modem to reboot. During the time of the modem rebooting, connect your router and ensure your router is set up using PPPoE with the correct credentials, and you should be online.

If anything does go wrong, you can reset your modem and follow the first portion of what I typed above to disable the walled garden and obtain Internet Connectivity.
