upgraded to 3M, DSL speed has not increased

Hi,  I took advantage of a special offer Verizon had a month or two back, and upgraded from 1.5mbps DSL to 3.0mbps.

However,  speeds appear to be exactly the same as they were.   I even ran the DSL speed tests, and it confirmed that I was still getting about 1.5mbps.     Now I realize that this says "up to " 3mbps,  but still, shouldn't it be breaking the 1.5 barrier?   If not,  why aren't I being charged the 1.5mbps price?

If I need new equiptment to get the faster speed,  I haven't received any.   Any ideas?

When you requested the increased speed did you ask for a line check to verify that your location could receive the increase?  Also suggest that you connect the modem to the jack in the NIC which is the box on the outside of the house.  If you have the higher speed, then call tech services and request that they run a CAT5 cable to your inside jack where you have the modem connected.  The old cabling sometimes has problems with the dsl delivery.  The modem probably is OK.  I changed from the 3mbps to the 7mbps package and received a new 6100 modem from Verizon since they indicated is was necessary.  I have used both the new and the old 2200 modem and get the usual 5mbps speed which is better than the previous 3 but below the advertised 7.  Again it meets the UP TO clause.  Verizon will cap the speed to a level which is likely to provide a continous connection.

You should post your transceiver statistics (from http://192.168.1.)  That will provide some indication of what the line is capable of.

No new equipment is needed to go from 1.5mbps to 3.0mbps.

The speed you get is the lower of the Verizon provisioned speed, or the highest speed that the modem can successfully negotiate with the Central Office equipment. That is a function of quality and length of the copper pair that connects you to the Central Office.

As others have pointed out, sometimes the issue is inside the house wiring, in which case a new outlet and a 'whole house' filter at the Network Interface will usually fix it.

Good luck
