I am trying to set up home networking with two computers and a printer. I have a actiontec gt784wnv router supplied by verizon. My question is with the router allow a computer with windows8 to sork in a home network setup?

Sort of.  I'm not familiar with that router but don't think the router model should matter.  The biggest problem, in my experience, is that the various versions of Windows don't play nice with each other.  If you are trying to include anything prior to Windows 7, it won't work.

Suggested steps:

In Network and Sharing Center:  (for all computers)

  • Turn on network discovery.
  • Turn on file and printer sharing.
  • Use 128 bit encryption
  • Turn off password protected sharing.
  • Allow Windows to manage homegroup connections.

In file explorer, under network you should be able to see all computers.

The printer can be a separate headache.  If everything worked well it should show up under network also.  But some HP printers are difficult to share.

Good luck.
