Increase WiFi Speed of Actiontec MI424WR rev. F Router?

I recently upgraded my FiOS internet service to 50/25 Mbps down/up.  I'm getting ~60/30 Mbps when connected via the ethernet but only ~20/15 via the WiFi (and the router is 15" from the laptop).  Verizon sent me a new router (Actiontec MI424WR rev. F) expecting that would solve the problem, but it didn't.

Does anyone have any ideas about how I might get the WiFi speed closer to the 50/25 speed?  Note that the WiFi card in my laptop is 802.11b/g/n.  Thanks.

Try going into the router settings, and wireless and advanced wireless and select WPA2 security and AES

WEP won't do Wireless n speeds, and WPA2 and AES will.

So you would likely see an imediate bump in performance.

In addition, if you have no "802.11 G" or "B" devices on your network, verify your router is set to performance mode, not compatibility mode.

Hubrisnxs: many thanks!  You were right: that greatly improved my speeds to around 35/25 (down/up).  Truly appreciated.

jackmcgann: Also thanks!  This idea also helped, although not as much as the security idea above: it probably gave me another 3-5Mbps down and up over what I got by changing from WEP to WPA.  Every bit helps, so thanks again.

My experience is that yes you will get a bump in performance but at a price. With multiple mobile devices and gaming systems, changing to performance mode and WPA2 caused connection issues for the kids. Had ot go back to compatability mode and WEP.  Since Verizon does not support wireless, I am stuck with G after paying for a new router last year. Personally I am not a fan of Wifi for this reason. I find it interesting that Verizon's commercials have no images of ethernet connections but lots of mobile devices and claims of lighting fast connections with their new Wifi speeds. I also get a chuckle when the two kids go to grandmothers house and she orders Quatrom and instantly they are playing with all their mobile devices. Anyone who has ordered any change in their service knows that the change can take days to take effect  Very misleading.

Must be very old equipment if WPA2 or WPA is not supported.  You really want to avoid WEP.
