Caller ID Display of Unlisted numbers

A while back a Verizon service representative gave me a code (not *77) to enter and the code enabled the caller ID display to show the name of the caller instead of "Private", "Out-of-Area", etc.  for unlisted numbers.  The code worked fine until recently.  Unfortunately, I can't remember the code and  have been trying to get a Verizon representative to tell me what it is so I can reenter it to see if that solves the problem.  I haven't had any luck getting an answer from Verizon.  Has anyone ever heard of this code and, if so, please tell me what it is!  Thanks!

Ok dumb question but don't people have to pay for an unlisted number?  What's the point if there is a work around on the caller ID if it says private caller?  I don't have a home phone anymore but I have 2 friends with unlisted numbers that came up private caller now on my cell it says restricted so I know it's them.  The out of area I get as it's always telemarketers so work around for that is fine but the private numbers should not be allowed to be displayed if people pay to be unlisted.  Mary

Mary:  You're right, you do have to pay for an unlisted phone number;  but I'm looking at it more from the point of view  that I have a right to know who's calling me.  The feature I'm talking about didn't display the unlisted phone number; but it did display the persons name associated with that  phone number; so the privacy of the phone number was still maintained.

But that is why people pay for an unlisted number is they don't want their name displayed.  Honestly if I paid for an unlisted number and found out there was a work around so my name could be displayed on caller ID I would feel very ripped off especially if this info was not told to me when paying for an unlisted number.  I have never had an unlisted number so maybe it is told to people but I really can't see the point of paying for an unlisted number if someone can get your info displayed anyway.

I know when we had plain old home phone service I could dial and set something for free so that a private number had to push something on their end to let their info show on my end if they wanted to get through so if I had set that up they would be forced to show their info to me for it to go through but I never did that since it was two friends only that I got private calls from and it only worked with private numbers not the unavailable that telemarketers use.  Mary
