Cannot port number

I had a landline for 33 years and then was moving within the same state but a different area code. I was unable to port my longtime phone number because it was a different area code. If I had FIOS in new residence I would have been able to do it but FIOS is not available in that location. However, I realized I do have FIOS at my 2nd home in another state. So I was able to port my number to that location. Now i am going to sell my 2nd home and still want to be able to have this number. Verizon says I cannot have it in my new residence because of the area code. My cable company says the same thing. Is there any way I can still keep this number? Is there a way to have a number without a physical location, i.e., like a cloud service or virtual number? I has been over 36 years now with that number and family, friends, businesses, etc. all have that number. Can I move the number to a cell phone or, for now, discontinue the FIOS and just have that number in my 2nd home as a landline that I can forward?

You could call a cell company to see if they can port it in. A cheaper option may be Google voice. They only charged a couple dollars to do the porting. Then you can forward the number to wherever you like.

This sounded like a good solution but after researching I found out that I cannot port a landline to Google Voice.

VoIP services such as Vonage and OOMA can port landline numbers.  Check them out.

Good Luck.

You can try and port it to magic jack. Then you can take the number anywhere you have internet service.
