No dial tone, can't reach verizon 1800 number?

I have no dial tone, and I don't know for how long.  I tried the troubleshooter steps to no avail, so I went outside to call on my cell(non-verizon wireless), only to find, for some reason, I can't reach Verizon's 1800 number.  I tried several times and it wouldn't connect.  I tried another number to make sure I had service, and that worked, so I don't know what's going on but I'd like my phone to work.
