Phone options (current landline subscriber who can't upgrade to digital)

Basically I've been trying to upgrade to digital voice with no luck. Everyone at verizon gives my a different answer as to why current customers can't switch, but my neighbor just got a new installation, is lucky enough to get it.

So I'm paying about $40/month for just the phone line, and in the end I'm not sure it's worth it. I rarely use it, but would like to keep the number in case of emergencies. Google voice has a pretty good service now with voicemail, and it has the apps and online interface that I'm looking for.

Basically I'm just looking at other options, and am wondering if anyone else is thinking the same thing, or has any ideas to get the cost down.

Thanks!

I was in the same boat.  Paying $40 for a home phone I wasn't using since we had cells and I am not a 2hr phone talker.  When my son started college a few years ago instead of hooking up a landline where he was for another bill we got him a cell on our plan and I dropped the home phone and had the home number of 25yrs ported to my verizon cell so that is our main phone now and no home phone.

I didn't have to worry about calling the bank and such to change the number so it has worked out good and the port went very smoothly.   I have not regretted it and my verizon cell service is very good and I have never had trouble sending or receiving calls from anywhere plus we have unlimited texting so works to stay in touch with son at college and I don't regret doing this one bit.  I love when I go on vacation now I don't have to call home to check an answering machine and I get my calls where ever I am which works fine for me.  Mary
