Apparently for FiOS Digital Voice they've made a change that allows seven-digit dialing within the area code. I'm in Southern California (Long Beach) but others on the East Coast are reporting this too. There's a slight delay until the system realizes you're just dialing the seven digits. It's a nice change. That recorded voice to use area code + number always made me feel way stupid.

Thanks for the info. Just checked it and seven digit dialing works in Virginia now.

They clearly made the change. My phones do NOT have the function you describe. It is not being performed by the phones and is being reported from multiple people in multiple parts of the country.

I have FiOS in Maryland and they haven't made the change here. I just tried calling my cell phone (both in the 410 area code) and it said "Please dial area code and number."

Area code 443 overlays area code 410 in Baltimore, its suburbs, and the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Seven-digit dialing is not possible on any system when area codes are overlayed.
