What am I doing wrong?

Since the economy is so bad right now, I would like to just get a local calling plan for a basic fee.  I don't use my phone that much, I have a prepaid cell if need be.  So how do i cancel the package I have now, get a basic plan for a few dollars a month and also keep my verizon internet service?  I keep trying to do it online, do I need to call them?

You probable Will have to call them to change the type of service you want.

I think about the least expensive basic service is right at $25.00.

I use Charter cable as my ISP (but Dish Network for television) and I use  US Cellular for my cell phone,

then I use Verizon for my land line - wow ---

In a perfect world I could probable find one company to handle all these things...

Customer service is so lacking with Verizon that there is no way

I would put any more with them.Smiley Mad

You should really call them and discuss your options. Calling plans can vary from state to state. In my state, there are flat rate plans for around $20 that give you unlimited local calling. There are also plans with minimal or no monthly fee, that charge on a per minute basis. Speak to a customer service rep. My experience with them is very good.
