I recently had a FiOS package installed that involved porting a Vonage (VoIP) number over to Verizon.  My Vonage line (in central NJ) only required a 7 digit number when calling within the same area code.  Earlier with ATT Callvantage (another VoIP service), I need 10 digits, but not so with Vonage (which I believe is a pretty big outfit).
