splicing phone wire

I tried to add wire to my existing phone wire to reroute it in my room. I used 4 cap splicers ( 1 on each of the 4 wires ) now that phone doesn't work. What is the correct way to splice a wire? What did I do wrong?

First I would ask, did the jack work where the wire originally ended? 

When you spliced the wires, did you go color for color? ie: red to red, green to green...Those are really the only two you need.

are you sure the new wire is good and not shorted? 

You can check the wires in the jack and make sure none came loose or broken.

As for splicing the wires, althougth it's not the way we would do it, you can twist the wires together and tape each individual wire so they don't short against each other, i've seen some use electrical connectors.  We generally use scotch locks to splice wires, or we leave the original jack where is it and add additional wire using the  screw post in the jack.
