Yes - Older dvr's (e.g. 6416) can be updated for a widescreen guide. But you'll have to pay!

When 1.9 first rolled out I called tech support to ask about why the guide wasn't in widescreen and he informed me that I would need a new dvr box as the older ones did not support this functionality.  I decided to see if I could tolerate it but it's too difficult to read in 4x3. So today I call up and tech support referred me to the billing department.  He said that since the box isn't broken there's nothing they can do.

The billing department tells me they can upgrade my box for an additional $3 per month.  When I asked about mailing back old box he said that it was a firmware upgrade only.  I got them to confirm that they were showing my account as having a 6416.  I called back to speak with a 2nd rep as I thought I was misunderstanding something.

They both offered deals to offset the cost for 1 year but I declined for the time being while I consider other options.  I was perfectly content with the existing guide and feel I shouldn't have to pay to be able to read the menu from where I sit.  I can understand arguments regarding the pricing of the content but this box 4-5 years old now and the cost has been recouped by Verizon and the rental should be pure profit for them now.  To have to pay additional money for a problem they caused is outrageous.

Last time I heard about paying, it was only if you wanted to upgrade to the 7232 500gb drive and more capacity. $40 is the cost for that. Changing your box to a 7216 which has the same capacity as the 6416 should be no cost. Unless things have changed and they have just run out of those 7216 boxes.

Perhaps we can get clarification on that subject yet again.

I wouldn't stand for that and what prisaz told you is definitely correct.  If I were you, I would either ask for a supervisor or better yet, call a Verizon Fios store in your area and see if you can just replace the box there.

I returned my 6416 and picked up a 7232 in the store and wasn't charged anything more then or now.

Cool Nascar. Online they have/had the upgrade link to pay $40. Perhaps that is if you already have a 7216 and want the 7232?

I guess it may also depend on where you are, or what they have available. Interesting.

My TV is wide screen and my guide is narrow.

I can read the guide but it is very small and my eyes are very old.

Is Verizon crazy?

They should fix the problem.

If I am paying for HD why do I have a low definition guide?

Put the box in an oven under a low heat that leaves no traces and slowly bake?

When it burns out Verizon will have to give you a new box for free.

All you  have to do is have any MPEG 4 channel and they will replace it no questions asked.

Ultimate plans, some sports channels, and foreign language have been MPEG-4 for a while.  They recently added some to Extreme (sorry don't have list), and so it should be easier to find a channel you cannot receive.
