I was hoping the 1.9 update would improve parental controls, no! I've posted about this before...
Currently useless. Make controls strict and an adult has to do the following:
flip a channel, get locked out, unlock the channel. Flip to next channel, that's locked, unlock it. Go to previous channel, that's locked, unlock it!
I had cox cable and they had it down perfect and simple. Once prompted to unlock it remained unlocked for 6 hours or until you power cycled the box. Perfect!
Why can't we get that?
One issue that i noticed when it comes to parental controls is that when you turn them on to try to not allow all of the adult titles that are very graphic to be shown on the guide a lot of regular movies and tv shows are blocked out too. That has to do with the fact that when you activate them anything that is rated mature is listed as a adult title but the problem with that is that everything that is listed as mature or nc-17 gets blocked. Tv shows on hbo like true blood, game of thrones, and the newsroom that are listed as mature immediately get listed as a adult title. A movie like kiss of death with david caruso and nicolas cage is listed as a adult title because it is rated mature while another movie with jennifer connelly called requiem for a dream is listed as a adult title because it is rated nc-17 so what you have are parental controls that are often too strong that need to be modified.
Leaving it unlocked is not the way I would want it.
The "Lock Adult" functionality is faulty and poorly defined.
What SHOULD happen is that PORNOGRAPHY channels should be locked out and not listed.
What actually happens is that anything not rated including weather is lumped into an "adult title" group and gets their title blanked out and locked out, yet the channels are still listed due to the inability to control channel listings beyond the simplistic choices already present.
What also needs to be available is the ability to lock ANY channel so that it is not listed in any guide and not accessible.
Another fine example of extremely poor programming of the FiOS DVR IMG.
