I made a duplicate online payment from my checking account in error.   How do I cancel one of the payments?  Both payments are in-process, and I have been told that Verizon will charge me $30 if I do a stop payment with my bank.  Ridiculous!

This happened to me one time, and in the process VZ only credited a single payment to cover the related charges.  However in my case the payments did not involve a bank account but rather credit cards.  One option is to just let the payments stand as a credit for the upcoming month.

Thanks armond_in_nj.   Because VZ has no common sense to allow their support folks to fix a customer error, I think I will dispute the duplicate charge at my bank.   It may be extra work for VZ to research but they could have fixed it from the beginning.

Trying to stop an electronic payment in-process is like trying to stop a paper check once the post office has it.  It can't be done.

If you place a stop payment on it, that would be similar to a non-sufficient funds charge.  Most, and probably all, businesses would charge you for that.

Disputing the charge at your bank would be fruitless because you initiated the charge.

Best course of action is to follow armond_in_nj's advice.  Alternatively, you could let them clear then contact Verizon customer service and see if they will  reverse one of them.
