I got a similar email:

"Reminder to Change Your My Verizon Account User ID

Dear My Verizon User,

As a reminder, we recently launched a completely new My Verizon with improved security, easier access
and richer features. In order for you to experience these changes, it is necessary for you to:

1. Log On to http://www.myverizon.com
2. Update Your My Verizon User ID by September 30, 2010

Your current My Verizon User ID will not work after this date. It just takes a few moments, so why not do it now?

Login to http://www.myverizon.com to update your User ID. You’ll be shown one of two pages, so please select
either "Yes! Switch Now" or "Continue" and follow the instructions to make this change and experience the
all new My Verizon!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So I called Tech Support and asked if this will change my email access, and they said that the email was a scam!

If it isn't, and I change "MyVerizon" userid to a new one,  I still don't know if this will change my email access.

I have received the same email at least four times, but they are sent to an MSN email address.  The first time I thought it was a phishing scam and tried the online chat with tech support and the guy said that it was okay and to click on the link.  During the process I had to restart IE and so I reinitiated the online chat with tech support.  This time the person said that the email was spam and don't reply to it.  I told her that with phishing and spam, you are not supposed to click on anything in the email and one of the Verizon reps already told me to do it and I did it.  She replied with a statement that it wouldn't be a problem, I just shouldn't reply to it.

CRAZY!

So, then I went to Verizon.net and did see that it looked different, so I thought that maybe it was legit.  So, each time I get the email reminder to change my user id, I go to the Verizon.net website and log in just to make sure my login works.  None of the times do I get a choice like the email says of "Yes, switch now" or "Continue".  I just get taken to the new My Verizon web page.  So, I thought that I was enrolled.  No worries.

Today I got the email again and it made me worry again.  So I went to this community forum to see what others had to say since I cannot rely on Verizon's tech support.  It wouldn't let me log into the forum.  It said I have not registered.  Worries.  So I pretended that I was a new registerant with the My Verizon website (even though I already log into it almost every day to read email when I am away from my home computer).  It took me through a registration process where I had to enter my Verizon account number, and my phone number and the amount of the last bill I paid.  Now it says that I am registered.  That is convoluted....frustrating...illogical...what other descriptive can I use?  If I had not wanted to post on the Community Forums website, I would have not been registered with My Verizon and would have potentially lost my user ID on 09/30/10!

I can not believe I spent the last a few hours trying to figure out what is going on and am still not sure!

I received the email from reply-isnot-monitored@verizon.com three times saying that I need to change the Verizon user ID before Sep. 30th to continue to access to their new website.

It looked very legit and I followed the http://www.myverizon.com link and logged into my account but could not find the page where I can do Switch NOW or Continue. That made me puzzled and goggled and it led me to this place.

So far, there is no indication that this is a scam that tries to steal personal info. Even if it is, Verizon probably did something to it since this email was sent the first time  last July. This is crazy that the answer should be obvious by now but I am still in the dark whether this is a scam or just glitch in the new website?

I looked on the Announcements, and I do not see anything about that.

I suspect a phishing attack. Do not reply to their e-mail. Do not fill in the forms on that site IF you visit it.

I agree.

Recently many users verizon.com accounts have been migrated over to use their internet verizon.net account. This has caused many issues and was an automated process when a user signed into verizon.com. Do not use any links or provide account information for any accounts requesting to be updated via Email. Go to the official web site such as verizon.com, and not via any link in an Email. Do this to be sure. If you are required to make any changes, you will be prompted to do so. This could be a phishing attack to take advantage of the recent changes.

I went through the process last month, and my verizon.com account user name is now the same as my verizon.net user name. Which I did not care for the change being made, but it is what it is. I was prompterd by the website when I logged in. Be very cautious of any Email asking for account information.

I first suspected it was a phishing scam as well, but given the fact that there's a page on www.verizon.com saying exactly what the email said, I don't think so.  It actually seems to me like Verizon is just such a gigantic company that one department doesn't know what another department is talking about.  See, this page is clearly on www.verizon.com:

http://www.verizon.net/promo/email_promos/myverizon_identity/reminder/index.html

So I don't think this is phishing.

I agreed that it could be a Phishing attempt, but it doesn't mean it is. When in question go to the source. I can build a site that looks exactly like Verizon. Log all information entered into a file, and most people would think they were at the real place it is not difficult. You could click on verizon.com and the HTML could redirect you to a fake domain that looks just like the real thing. Even with Verizon showing on the URL line.

That is why I say open your browser when in question, and enter the domain name and or URL yourself. Not from an email or possible HTML with malicious scripting.

Based on the fact I had to change mine, it may be legitimate.

This is from Verizons support site.

"

What is phishing?

Phishing is a method of getting personal and financial information through fraudulent means. A phishing scam involves sending spam or pop-up messages to lure credit card numbers, Social Security numbers, passwords, or other sensitive information from Internet users.

Phishing scams can be very elaborate. Emails and pop-ups asking you for information may look authentic and direct you to web sites that appear to be real company sites.

To protect yourself from phishing scams:

  • Never provide personal information as a result of an email or pop-up.
  • Don't send personal or financial information by e-mail.
  • Remember that reputable businesses never ask for personal information via email or pop-ups.
  • Forward phishing spam or suspicious emails to the company or organization being impersonated.
