Sim card swapping

My wife and I (and family) are shifting to Vermont for 4 months before returning back to our home in New Zealand.  

Can we use our unlocked NZ cellphones (unlocked is the norm here) and purchase a Sim card for each to use on the Verizon network while we're in the US?
