Today our guest blogger is Jayne Mayer, Director of Employee Engagement at Verizon. Her topic is college scholarships for children of employees. It's another way we harness the power of our employees by providing them with the flexibility and resources to be effective at home and work:

In all, 530 students – all children or dependants of Verizon employees – will each receive a $5,000 scholarship for the 2011-2012 school year.

The scholarships are for incoming freshman and students continuing their education at an accredited four-year institution in the fall. Each scholarship is renewable for a maximum of three years and has a total value of $20,000.

For the 2011-2012 academic year, the Verizon Foundation will provide a total of more than $2.64 million for the scholarships.  One hundred scholarships are for incoming freshman, and 430 are for continuing support for previous winners.

Education is a key issue for the Verizon Foundation and this scholarship program is a natural extension of the Foundation’s efforts. It provides a substantial investment in the education of our future leaders and is also of great benefit to our employees.

Since 2001, the scholarship program has invested more than $42.3 million toward the college education of 2,353 children and dependents of Verizon employees.

To see list of this year’s new Verizon scholars and where they plan to attend in the fall, visit the Verizon Foundation website at:

As these students prepare to end their high school careers, or complete their spring college semester, join me in congratulating them on their tremendous accomplishments.

Enjoy your summer and Good Luck in the fall!
