Our Fourth Green Wireless Phone Launches Today

Samsung-Illusion_133x240.jpgToday we launch our fourth green Verizon Wireless mobile device, the Samsung Illusion. For several years now we’ve been encouraging our suppliers to focus on sustainability, and we’ve developed a “Sustainability Scorecard” for them — a comprehensive checklist of green qualities that we’d like to see in our products. And Samsung delivered a terrific phone. Underwriters Laboratories gave it 84 out of 119 points, enough to earn the “Platinum” UL Environmental rating. There are some other environmentally-friendly design elements.

  • The rear casing and battery cover are made from 70 percent post-consumer material and the front casing is made of 35 percent post-consumer material

  • The packaging is made from bleach-free, post-consumer waste recycled paper, printed with vegetable ink

  • The box is made of 60 percent post-consumer waste recycled paper

  • It includes a high-efficiency charger with a full-charge alarm, so conscientious customers can avoid the power-leeching “vampire effect” that comes when a charger is left plugged in.

Our product teams are working to bring more environmentally-friendly products to market, so we’ll have more good news to report down the road. And don’t forget that our telecommunication services can help you save energy by avoiding unnecessary travel and monitoring home energy use. In the meantime, the Illusion is on sale at the Verizon Wireless website now, and there’s a discount available starting Thanksgiving Day until Nov. 28.
