Since 1912, the Better Business Bureau has been a mainstay for both consumers and businesses to find reliable information and to build confidence and trust in one another. Each year the Council of Better Business Bureaus awards companies that mirror its values through its International Torch Awards.

Last evening, Verizon was a recipient of the 2010 Torch Award in the category of marketplace excellence.

It was a busy week last week. We announced a far-reaching effort to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions of our operations this year. The announcement focused on a few highlights, but there will be more programs explained and featured in Verizon’s upcoming Corporate Responsibility Report. Some of our efforts will be invisible to our customers, our increased use of conferencing like high-def video and telepresence to reduce travel or the use of software to better manage our buildings are just two examples. Others will be easier to see. If one rolls down your street, you won’t be able to miss one of the 1,100 alternative energy vehicles we’re adding to our fleet – from compressed natural gas vans to hybrid pick-up trucks and sedans – which we expect will reduce CO2 emissions by more than 2,400 metric tons annually.
