Contract Takeover - New Forum Section Proposal

I've noticed a lot of members wanting to get out of a contract usually because of a phone they hate and wanting something new.   A lot of members don't realize that if they can find another eligible person to "takeover" the remaining portion of their contract, Verizon will release you and allow the other individual to assume the remaining portion of the contract.   Reason being Verizon merely wants "someone" (anyone) to finish the contract.

There are a lot of advantages here for all.   You get to end a contract with a phone you hate and start a new contract with one you'd rather have.    Another individual gets a shortened contract (something actually desirable to a lot of people).    Verizon doesn't lose an angry and frustrated customer who normally would just run to another carrier in anger - AND- Verizon gains a new member!

I would therefore like to propose that we include a New Section to our forum here for members wanting to opt out early from their contracts to meet up with others who are seeking to pick up a shortened contract!   I think this would be a great member service and a popular one!

Why would anyone take over a contract. The only benefit to a Verizon wireless contract is getting a new free, or cheap phone. So what does it benefit the person taking over?

You would be amazed at how many people simply don't WANT a long term contract.   A great many people either already have a Verizon phone or got one from a friend or EBay or wherever so they're not looking for a reduced price phone that binds you for years under a long contract.   They are simply looking for the "service".    Sure you can go straight to month-to-month by out right buying the phone at full retail, but who wants to spend $500 bucks doing that?

If they have a phone already, they dont need a contract. They should be able to just get a month to month plan.

Absolutely true!   As a result of the recent legal actions against all the carriers a lot of changes have been made and you no longer "have" to have a contract.    But what I'm talking about is linking people with existing Verizon contracts who want to get out early without paying the ETF so they can start anew with the phone they really want - WITH - people who are looking to get into Verizon who want the service, have a phone (or would buy the phone from the existing contractor) and don't mind taking over a short-term contract.

Never said you HAD to have a contract.

There are a lot of people wanting out of an existing contract so they can get something new but they can't without finding someone to assume what they have now.   Providing a section where these people can link up might be helpful.   Even another existing Verizon contractor might be interested in picking up the phone and the remainder of another members contract because they want that particular phone.   A section that allows them to link up with each other might be useful.

Tim,

The most frequent reason folks wish to assume someone else's contract is to free themselves up to purchase a new device at full discount.  For example, say you have Phone X and are in month 6 of a two year contract.  You have few options related to obtaining the new device at "new" customer discount.  So, you get someone to assume your contract so you can buy Phone Y at full discount.

Obviously, Verizon wireless does not encourage this practice, so it is not something we would sponsor as a forum category.  That said, we are always open to suggestions via the upcoming Idea Exchange - and based on the communities feedback - may take it under consideration.

Where would I go to post a response asking for someone to take over my contract? Please contact me. Thank you.

Well that's just the point.   My proposal is to create a section for precisely this reason.   So far there is no section dedicated to this pursuit.
