Talking Back To the TV

tweetbird.gifIf you need more proof that social networking is spreading to the TV, take a look at what Fox College Sports is doing.

According to an article by Sports Video Group, Fox College Sports is giving fans a chance to interact directly with the broadcast.  Sideline reporter Samantha Steele invites fans to send 140-character Twitter messages to her throughout the game.  She then uses some of their comments during the broadcast.

For example, fans have asked for more shots of the game from a certain camera angle and contributed stories about a member of the home team's marching band.

On FiOS TV, of course, we are doing something similar by incorporating Twitter and Facebook into the whole experience.  Using the remote control and on-screen menus, FiOS viewers can Tweet about TV shows they're watching or update their Facebook pages on the TV screen.

The idea is to connect TV to social networking so that TV is no longer just about sitting back and watching the show.  It's an interactive experience to be shared with friends -- or with the sideline reporter during the football game.

What do you think - is this something useful, or a gadget?  Have you used Twitter on FiOS TV to talk with friends during a game?  Let us know.
