Who’s Your Thanksgiving Meal Hero?

by on ‎11-14-2012 01:23 PM

Holiday-Hero_250x250.jpgI spend every Thanksgiving with my husband’s family and I think everyone would agree that the Thanksgiving hero at our dinner is Aunt Bobbe, who makes a lasagna that can’t be beat and a banana bread that I’m still trying to replicate.

I’m sure you all have your own “Aunt Bobbe” so why not share your story and tell us all about him or her? By submitting a short story and photo about your Thanksgiving meal hero, you could win a trip to New York City and a tour of Food Network Studios. Plus, Verizon FiOS and Food Network are teaming up to support the No Kid Hungry program by helping to provide meals via votes for your stories. Here are all the details.

In 75-200 words, tell us who makes your Thanksgiving meal special and how you stay connected with that person via TV, Internet and phone throughout the year. Whether it’s emailing pictures of the kids, weekly phone calls, or snuggling up together to watch your favorite show, we want to hear about it. Once you submit your entry on our website here, make sure to share your story with friends and family on Facebook, Twitter and Google+ and ask them to vote for you. These votes will help determine the 25 top-rated entries, from which a panel of judges made up of Verizon and Food Network executives will determine the ultimate winner.  That person will receive a grand prize trip to New York City for four people, including round-trip airfare and car transportation, hotel accommodations for three nights, a tour of the Food Network Studios, dinner at a restaurant of a Food Network chef, and a $500 check.

The votes can make you a hero as well! Verizon and Food Network have set a goal of reaching 150,000 meals in support of No Kid Hungry, a nonprofit organization dedicated to connecting kids with the meals they need. Those who register to read and rate the Thanksgiving Meal Hero stories will be able to donate up to 30 meals with just a few clicks – 1 rating equals 3 meals. You also can donate an additional 30 meals just by checking to see if you are qualified for Verizon FiOS during the registration process. Anyone who registers to vote also qualifies for a weekly sweepstakes through which you can win a package of Food Network cookbooks and supplies as well as a tablet device. You can enter that sweepstakes daily just by rating at least one story.

While you’re at it, don’t miss out on cooking tips from Food Network and Verizon FiOS, which you can find on our Facebook page. The Verizon FiOS “Quick Tips” feature videos that identify tips to save time in the kitchen, such as how to cook your turkey faster. Our Facebook page also currently features Thanksgiving recipes, some of which are available on FiOS TV Video on Demand as well.  In addition to these directional videos, you can use FiOS TV on demand to start celebrating the holiday early when we start airing Food Network Thanksgiving themed shows on Nov. 1. This includes Thanksgiving Live!, which airs on Sunday, Nov. 18 and will be available on demand the next day.

Don’t wait! You have until Nov. 22 to enter the sweepstakes and gather your votes. Share your Thanksgiving Meal Hero story with us today!
