by Employee ‎10-30-2009 09:31 AM - edited ‎11-01-2009 03:49 PM

Two CliffsAs you might have noticed, we’re a little baseball obsessed around here, but none more so that Media Relations staffer, ah, Cliff Lee. Poor guy is a Yankees fan, and, yep, he has the same name as the Phillies’ #1 pitching ace. As the NY Daily News noted, being a Yankees fan can be a problem for a guy named Cliff Lee. Read more...

Happy Red October

fiosbaseballTonight, game two. I know that I've blogged on the Yankees before, and when it's the regular season, and we're watching the American league, I'm all for the Yanks. But I won't deny that I'm from the City of Brotherly Love, and so when it's the Phils and the Yanks in the World Series, I have to be a die-hard Phillies fan. This is in the interest of full disclosure. Which brings me to last night and the great pitching by both teams, but also a solid 6-1 win for the guys the New York Post was mocking just the other day. It was crystal clear, ahem, FiOS clear on my television screen.... Read more...

Good News, America!

by Employee on ‎10-27-2009 03:30 PM

ColbertI trust I don't have to explain what "The Colbert Report" is. (OK, the satirical news show with host Stephen Colbert is one of the highest rated on Comedy Central, thanks to Colbert's portrayal of a self-important political commentator.) Anyway, now, the "mayor of truthiness" is posting the "The Colbert Report in :60," a one-minute online video that you can grab and put on your Web page, blog or social profile. Sponsored by Verizon, the video recaps the previous night's episode of "The Colbert Report." It's an easy way to catch up on the show and share the latest with friends. Read more...

Verizon Leads Cable in VOD. Period.

by Employee ‎10-23-2009 01:50 PM - edited ‎10-23-2009 01:56 PM

OnDemandSMALL.JPGI guess it's no surprise. When we said the other day that we have twice the number of VOD titles publicized by the nation's largest cable company, they didn't like our pointing that out. We announced the continued expansion of our robust FiOS TV Video on Demand library to more than 18,000 titles in every FiOS market. We noted that's nearly double the number of 10,000 titles advertised by Comcast in their own press releases. So Comcast was quick to take umbrage in Multichannel News. "We've got 18,000 VOD titles in Philadelphia!" they cry. (One market, and not surprising, it's their corporate backyard.) "We have more HD in certain markets!" they say. (Wonder how many and where because they didn't specify.) And, of course, they dusted off their tired, old claim that the HD content we offer from Howcast is somehow irrelevant and not of interest to customers. Read more...

Verizon Continues Push for MSG HD Channels

by Employee ‎10-23-2009 12:56 PM - edited ‎10-23-2009 01:08 PM

Hockey Player Verizon is again calling on the federal government to step in and force Cablevision to do the right thing and make the MSG channels it owns available in HD to FiOS TV viewers. Verizon VP Terry Denson testified before the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee that "...Congress should adopt a narrow legislative fix to address this demonstrated problem by preventing cable incumbents and their affiliates from denying competitors access to the unique regional sports programming that consumers demand." Here's a link to Terry's testimony. Read more...

by Employee ‎10-21-2009 10:49 AM - edited ‎11-09-2009 11:09 AM

Almost all of us would rather fix something quickly than call a customer service agent. Even the best customer service agent. So Verizon's developed the In-Home Agent, an online tool for setting up and adjusting FiOS Internet and TV systems. Hundreds of thousands have downloaded the app to their computers, and many of those customers are using it again and again. Now the Verizon In-Home Agent is getting smarter and smarter. Among recent improvements, the tool now includes a much simpler process for connecting a new or additional computer to your home wireless network.

Introducing New Service Bundles with Wireless

by Employee ‎10-19-2009 09:38 AM - edited ‎10-19-2009 03:43 PM

compandphone.JPGVerizon today is rolling out the newest service bundles for consumers, which include TV, Internet, home phone and, now, Verizon wireless plans. It's the combination of two powerful networks - landline and wireless -- and four separate services into a bundle on one bill, at one price, that also saves money for customers. That's what residents of several Verizon states in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions have to look forward to regardless of whether they're served by the FiOS network or our traditional copper network. You won't get these plans from the cable company. We call it a quad (short for quadruple, of course) bundle and there's several different service combinations for people to choose from, depending on what Internet speed, TV package or wireless usage best fits you. You've Got Mail

by Employee on ‎10-13-2009 03:19 PM

E-mail.JPGThe Wall Street Journal has an interesting article this week titled "Why Email No Longer Rules." The thought is that email has had a good run, but it's so yesterday. E-mail is being upstaged by a new generation of communications services. Once upon a time, according to reporter Jessica E. Vascellaro, we weren't connected to the Internet 24X7, and email worked well in bursts. Today, most of us go online as soon as we boot up, so tools like Twitter and Facebook let us communicate more frequently and informally - and faster. Read more...

Expert Opinions on Network Management

by Employee on ‎10-12-2009 04:04 PM

Verizon logo.gifWhen you ask network engineers and other experts about managing Internet traffic, many of them make the same point: Significant changes are needed in the way the Internet handles congestion, deals with security problems and ensures good quality for latency-sensitive applications. Many of these experts also say that ISPs and broadband providers must have the flexibility to manage these issues. Read more...

broadband.JPGYou don‘t have to read far in this blog to get the idea that we’re pretty excited about fiber optics. So this week, when the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics to innovators who developed fiber optics for all sorts of applications, including the Verizon FiOS network, we were thrilled. Charles K. Kao was awarded half of the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physics "for groundbreaking achievements concerning the transmission of light in fibers for optical communication," according to the official press release. He shares the prize with two former Bell Lab engineers Willard S. Boyle and George E. Smith who invented an imaging semiconductor circuit – the CCD sensor.” Read more...

CentralNY FiOS (smaller).JPGCentral New York is typically Orange country, thanks to the longtime success of Syracuse University's sports teams. But I have a feeling today the local cable company, Time Warner, is seeing red now that Verizon FiOS TV is up and running in eight towns and villages in the region. Today, Verizon began offering the FiOS triple play of TV, Internet and voice services in Clay, East Syracuse, North Syracuse, Cicero, DeWitt, Salina, Camillus and Fleming. Is that a distant cheer I just heard go up in these towns? Read more...

Northeast Router Failure

by Employee ‎10-02-2009 05:36 PM - edited ‎10-19-2009 09:43 AM

Verizon LogoAs many of you may know, a router failed in the Verizon network this afternoon causing problems for some users of Verizon FiOS and High Speed Internet. Here’s what happened. The router in question is in New York City and handles traffic from the Verizon network to the larger Internet. It is one of a number of such routers in our network. When routers have problems, they are designed to report that they are sick. Internet traffic is rerouted to adjacent routers automatically and sent around the trouble spot. In this case, that didn’t happen. Read more...
