Customers With Disabilities

As a dad of young daughters, it’s fun helping to bridge the generational gap between them and my 86-year-old father.  My kids “get” Skype; love to FaceTime with close friends (with parental supervision); and find apps with ease on the family iPad.

On the flip side, my dad loves seeing photos and videos of grandkids on my Facebook account, but don’t dare text him; write him a thank-you note via email; or ask him to Tweet.

Considering each generation exhibits its own technological fluency, how does a company like mine showcase the benefits of using our flagship FiOS Internet and FiOS TV services to savvy, technologically fluent consumers who prefer living in apartments or condos vs. the ’burbs?

Thanksgiving Football – A Traditional Feast

by Employee ‎11-24-2011 11:00 AM - edited ‎11-25-2011 07:31 PM

ThanksgivingFootball.jpgThanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays because it involves food, family and football.  This weekend kicks off the holiday season, Black Friday sales and five full days of gridiron action. On Thursday there are three NFL games, starting at 12:30 p.m. with the NFC showdown between the Detroit Lions and undefeated Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers followed by the Dallas Cowboys hosting the Miami Dolphins.

copia. muchacha contenta.jpgCall it Cyber Monday or Black Monday; it’s that Monday after Thanksgiving when retailers and online outlets offer incentives for shopping online.  What may have been only a trend a few years ago has become a holiday-shopping tradition for many Americans.  Whether it’s free shipping or discount coupons, the online offers can make the life of time-strapped shoppers easier and more rewarding.  And you won’t even have to get out of your pajamas!  Luckily, with Verizon technology, you’ll have lightning-fast access to online retailers so you won’t miss out on any holiday deals.

This year, we want to be sure you’re prepared all season long to make smart and safe decisions while using your PC, laptop, smartphone or tablet to find the best holiday bargains.  Make your mantra this season “Prepare, Prevent, Protect” to stay one step ahead of cybercriminals.

Use FiOS TV to Check Stocks Right From Your Couch

by Employee ‎11-22-2011 09:27 AM - edited ‎11-22-2011 09:29 AM

icon_Fidelity_80x80.PNGFiOS TV subscribers can now get comfy on the couch while managing their stocks by using our new Fidelity Market Monitor app.

We’ve partnered with Fidelity on this application because Fidelity has long been a pioneer of new ways to manage your personal finances, just as Verizon has pioneered interactive “social TV” applications.

cine-nostalgia.pngSome of you may have noticed some new channels on your FiOS TV lineup in the last week.  That’s because we’ve added six new Spanish-language channels to FiOS TV’s La Conexion and Spanish Language packages.  The channels, described below, are now available in all FiOS TV markets.

Fantasy is Today’s Reality

10420492-football-player-catching-a-touchdown-pass.jpgSunday afternoons in the fall have taken on a new meaning in our house because everything stops at 1 p.m. when the first NFL game kicks off.  Just a few years ago, watching football was simply a passive hobby that included rooting for our favorite team or watching a big rivalry like the Jets/Patriots, Giants/Eagles.  Times have changed and now football viewing has gone from being a passive hobby to full-on competition off the field because of Fantasy Football.  And while many believe Fantasy Football is for men, make no mistake, this “sport” has a large female following too.

Innovation Rock Star – Internet Architect

TJ Xia is an Internet architect. He and his team are leading partners and equipment manufacturers in creating the network of the future--capable of efficiently managing the data transport that may seem impossible today.

In fact, he led a team of Verizon engineers in the world’s first 100 gigabits per second field trial with live Internet traffic.

In short, he’s an innovation rock star.

9 Hot Tech Trends You're Driving

by Employee ‎11-14-2011 10:48 PM - edited ‎11-22-2011 09:30 AM

What technology trends will drive consumer behavior or, more likely, what consumer behaviors will continue to drive evolution of technology in the coming year? Like Christmas decorations on sale before Halloween, it’s a question that’s arising early in technology conversations.

“It used to be that business and government created technology that eventually made it to the masses. Email, the Internet, and personal computers are three examples of how technology used to evolve,” Zafar explained. “Technological advancement is no longer driven from a ‘push-through' model where consumers are simply on the receiving end. End users -- consumers -- are driving technological change and creating a world where what they want is always accessible to them.”

Women and Football: What About the Booth?

by Employee on ‎11-11-2011 02:07 PM

8607773-extreme-close-up-of-a-football-with-flag-background.jpgWhen people ask me about well respected female sideline reporters, without any hesitation I think of Lesley Visser, Pam Oliver, Andrea Kremer, Erin Andrews, and Michele Tafoya, just to name a few.  When asked about the most respected female play-by-play commentators in the booth, I can only think of ESPN2’s Beth Mowins who offers play-by-play commentary for college football and ESPNU’s Pam Ward.  In fact, I had to research to see how many women have actually been in the booth over the years and it’s only been a handful.

This year Verizon is bringing these AMEX gift cards to even more of our customers and our many blog readers.

As the holiday shopping season commences, Verizon joins the Small Business Saturday movement again and we urge you to shop at a local business.  To get you started we’ll give you a $25 American Express gift card – the first 500 – to tell us about your favorite local shop.

What If Touchscreens Were Smarter?

If you’ve ever gotten frustrated by hitting the wrong key or keys on your smartphone while trying to send a text or email you’ll appreciate George Higa’s idea.

A Dallas-based designer who works on projects like FiOS TV’s interactive media guide, George was recently featured in Scientific American magazine’s “Patent Watch” column for his first patent, Patent No. 7,952,498.

We cajoled George into coming into Verizon’s studio recently and asked him a few questions about his patent and what went into his thinking.

Tiger Tide: Defensive Showdown

by Employee ‎11-04-2011 03:18 PM - edited ‎11-04-2011 03:29 PM

Footballimage11.4.11.jpgWe are half way through the season and the gridiron action is heating up both on the college and professional front.  Whether it’s Saturday’s defensive battle of #1 LSU vs.. #2 Alabama or Sunday’s offensive match up of Giants vs.. Patriots, there isn’t a shortage of great games this weekend.

LSU vs. Alabama is being viewed as the game of the decade.  Every sports radio and TV station is talking about it and the ticket cost alone for this match-up is incredible. As of Thursday, the asking price for one ticket was $5,000 and the game is on track to become the highest-selling college football game of the season. This is also the first time in SEC history the #1 and #2 teams are facing off in the regular season.

Consumer Electronic Standards for All Ages, Abilities

by Employee ‎11-02-2011 03:22 PM - edited ‎11-07-2011 05:00 PM

Nisheeth.PNGI learned and started focusing on consumer electronics and home appliances accessibility issues through Sunish Gupta (no relation) who I met during my education in Cambridge, MA. Sunish, 40, who was born sighted, experienced the onset of Retinal Pigmentosa, a condition that affects a person’s night vision and peripheral vision, in the mid-1990s. He was diagnosed with the incurable disease in 2001.

The population of the United States is aging rapidly, and many persons in the older population have disabilities that lower their quality of life. In fact:

  • 14.2% of persons over 65 reported long-lasting blindness, deafness, or hearing impairment in 2000.
  • And 42% reported some type of long-lasting disabilities.

It is important to enable seniors, persons with various disabilities, and other groups of consumers to access easily the ever-more-complex user interfaces found in everyday consumer electronics and home appliances.
