84_COULPE_COUCH_PLATE_8684_lores.jpgWhere would you rather shop, that is.

You might be living in a high-speed smart home, but are you one of those consumers that like to relax while shopping?  In our latest Borderless Consumer Survey (full release next week), we wanted to know where you do your online shopping. Sure, most like to sit at a desk or table, but a surprising percentage seem to want to relax on a bed or couch. Here are the full numbers…

Laptops and Desktops Still Rule the Online Shopping World

03_MOTHER_HUSBAND_DAUGHTER_1084_lores.jpgIt's national holiday sales story time as we report on Black Friday, Cyber Monday and all the sales times in between. As we prepare to roll out our next wave of data from our FiOS Innovation Index (our series of surveys that chronicle smart home developments), we thought we would go beyond tracking conventional online shopping information and take a look at how and where consumers are shopping while in the home. As we sift through our data, we’re seeing that smartphones and tablets are quite popular when surfing for gifts, but when it comes time to buy, consumers plan on doing so at a desktop or laptop.  Here’s what we found (and stay tuned to Verizon at Home next week for additional insights)…

Shop at the Speed of FiOS: A Closer Look at Cyber Monday

by Employee ‎11-21-2012 10:28 AM - edited ‎11-21-2012 11:21 AM

cybermonday_IG_112012_thumb.jpgBack in 2010, Cyber Monday became the largest online shopping day of the year in the U.S. Of course, that amazing feat was bested in 2011, and all projections for 2012 have sales for the day going through the roof. People are ready to celebrate the holiday season in a big way, as conservative estimates are predicting at least $1.5 billion in sales!

Since Verizon FiOS customers enjoy the fastest and most consistent Internet speeds available -- unlike cable company broadband that actually slows down when more of its customers are using it -- FiOS Internet users can take full and fast advantage of amazing Cyber Monday deals at their leisure. For popular items that sell out quickly, this can make the difference between a successful Cyber Monday and having to resort to the dreaded “Plan B.”

Black Friday 101: What to Expect and How to Shop Smart & Safe

by Employee ‎11-20-2012 07:30 PM - edited ‎11-21-2012 10:13 AM

black-friday-shoppers vz.jpgAs the countdown to launch of U.S. retailers’ biggest sales season approaches blast-off, Verizon at Home has good news, some not-so-good news, and some tips to share with you.

Big but not bigger crowds

The number of shoppers this year will be about the same as last year. According to a Nielsen research survey, 17 percent of consumers are planning to shop on Black Friday – which means that 82 percent don’t plan on shopping on Black Friday this year, a number that is consistent with levels in 2011 (82%) and 2010 (80%).  Nielsen says this reflects the growing turn to online shopping, a continuing shift of the holiday focus from Black Friday to Cyber Monday. More consumers report that they will shop on Cyber Monday this year than Black Friday, with 30 percent of consumers stating they will be shopping online this Cyber Monday.

This correlates with the findings of the Verizon FiOS Innovation Index: Borderless Lifestyle Survey, which recently determined that 39% of U.S. adults are borderless consumers – all of whom own a laptop or desktop PC, a smartphone or a tablet – and that 82 percent of survey respondents engage in online shopping from home.

Black Friday 101: The Tao of the Parking Lot

by Employee ‎11-20-2012 04:57 PM - edited ‎11-21-2012 10:14 AM

parking.jpgAs you map out your strategy for Black Friday 2012, you may want to pause to consider an often overlooked aspect of most holiday bargain safaris: parking.

The International Parking Institute offers insights into the Psychology of Holiday Parking with stress-avoidance and safety tips while shopping this Friday. According to parking psychology researchers (you can’t make this stuff up, folks), shoppers who circle parking lots hunting for an ideal space are wasting time and needlessly stressing themselves. Studies show that when distant parking spots are available, it’s best to just pick one, park and hoof it to the store. And, that familiar practice of "perching" – waiting and following someone to their car – is only effective when a parking lot is completely full.

Here’s a list of parking tips for Black Friday and the holiday season from the Institute:

We have all the usual Thanksgiving specials to look forward to, along with a special FiOS TV video-on-demand folder dedicated to “Turkey Tips.” More on that in the “One More Note” section below, and here’s your look at a selection of sporting events and other programs airing on TV during the coming week.

Holiday-Hero_250x250.jpgI spend every Thanksgiving with my husband’s family and I think everyone would agree that the Thanksgiving hero at our dinner is Aunt Bobbe, who makes a lasagna that can’t be beat and a banana bread that I’m still trying to replicate.

I’m sure you all have your own “Aunt Bobbe” so why not share your story and tell us all about him or her? By submitting a short story and photo about your Thanksgiving meal hero, you could win a trip to New York City and a tour of Food Network Studios. Plus, Verizon FiOS and Food Network are teaming up to support the No Kid Hungry program by helping to provide meals via votes for your stories. Here are all the details.

What to Watch – November 9-15

by Employee ‎11-09-2012 12:23 PM - edited ‎11-09-2012 01:14 PM

wtw_new_tv.jpgTelevision this next week will no doubt continue to focus on the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy and the recent nor'easter, as well as continued overage of President Obama's relection. FiOS TV also will be featuring a few free previews, which I’ve highlighted in the “One More Note” section below, along with a look at the holiday favorite “The Nutcracker” on demand. Here’s your look at a selection of sporting events and other programs airing on TV during the coming week:

Be Prepared: Nor'easter Approaching Sandy-Impacted Mid-Atlantic & Northeast

by Employee ‎11-06-2012 05:45 PM - edited ‎11-06-2012 05:47 PM

noreaster image.pngIt’s the last thing any of us want to hear in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. Forecasters at The Weather Channel are predicting that a nor’easter currently making its way up the East Coast will arrive in Sandy-impacted areas on Wednesday morning, Nov. 7, with strong winds, heavy rain, rough surf and cold temperatures. While this nor'easter won’t be nearly as intense as Superstorm Sandy, forecasters expect that some post-hurricane restoration work may be impacted.

Even as Verizon employees continue to work around-the-clock to restore services in the wake of Sandy, we’re also making preparations for this storm, as it may affect some Verizon customers – including those previously affected by Sandy.  This storm and resulting severe weather conditions could cause additional outages, and it may delay our efforts to restore services to those customers affected by Hurricane Sandy. If your services are affected by the nor’easter, please be assured that we will continue to work round-the-clock to restore them.

Verizon Stores & Locations Open For Anyone To Charge Devices

by on ‎11-05-2012 04:48 PM - last edited on ‎11-06-2012 12:56 PM by Employee

Verizon store.jpgAs relief and restoration work continues following Hurricane Sandy, Verizon teams are still working around-the-clock. In addition to the work our crews are performing in neighborhoods and business districts, Verizon is helping those affected in a number of ways, including matching donations to the American Red Cross and more.

We’re also working hard to get the word out that many Verizon FiOS stores and Verizon Wireless locations in the affected New York metropolitan area are open to anyone who needs to charge their wireless devices.

What To Watch – November 2

by ‎11-02-2012 10:21 AM - edited ‎11-02-2012 10:29 AM

This has been a trying week for all of us affected by Hurricane Sandy. At Verizon, we’ve been working hard to repair and restore service, as teams continue to work round-the-clock. For those of you who have had power return, or who are living in other parts of the country and never lost their power, our What To Watch suggestions for this week focus on Hurricane relief efforts.

Here are the listings for NBC and ABC, and of course a great deal of news will continue to focus on the aftermath of Sandy. For those affected, please stay safe.
