Viva Las Vegas and Verizon: CES 2011

by ‎12-30-2010 10:14 AM - edited ‎12-30-2010 10:27 AM

News_Center_Promo.JPGWhat happens in Vegas won’t stay in Vegas for visitors of the Verizon At Home blog and our Consumer Electronics Show (CES) website.

We’re fine-tuning a dazzling display for attendees of the 2011 CES that will let them experience a wide-range of consumer benefits of using Verizon broadband and entertainment services.  So even if you’re not headed for Vegas next week, you can come here for a taste of the excitement.

From the mammoth-sized Verizon show floor booth inside the Las Vegas Convention Center to the Verizon -sponsored press room and blogger lounge loaded with cool demonstrations, we will be front and center at CES.

During the four day show, we’ll give you the sights, sounds, news and innovative apps of our powerful networks that deliver time-saving, value-rich, productivity enhancing services to you.

Each New Year brings changes in programming.  That’s why we want to make sure that fans of Discovery Health (Channel 161 on FiOS TV) know that the channel will become OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network on Jan. 1, 2011.

OWN is a brand new network with a mix of original programs, specials, original documentaries and acquired movies. There are also plans underway for weekly series on the network. You can read about some of the programs here.

What about your favorite Discovery Health shows?

On Christmas Eve, kids around the world will be asking the age-old question—where is Santa? And though Christmas is still a couple of days away, and the questions have not yet begun, we want to share a nifty tool for you and your family to track Santa’s location on the eve of Christmas.

This holiday season, Verizon Business will team with the North American Aerospace Defense Command to provide the “NORAD Tracks Santa” hotline so children of all ages can follow Santa Claus as he makes his trip around the word.

The tradition started accidentally in 1955 after a local newspaper misprint prompted children to call the Continental Air Defense Command (NORAD's predecessor) instead of a special Santa hotline phone number. After hearing youngsters ask if they could speak to Santa, the colonel on duty told the children he could see Santa on the radar screens, heading south from the North Pole – and a tradition was born.

Apple fans rejoice.  Your holiday stocking now contains yet another gift from Verizon FiOS.

Starting today, FiOS TV customers who also have the Apple iPad can now download FiOS Mobile, our free application that lets customers use the iPad to remotely manage their DVRS anywhere at any time.  The tasty new app also turns the iPad into a television remote control.

FiOS TV customers have used their iPhones and iPod Touch devices as a remote control and DVR manager since Fall.  By expanding the app to the iPad, we’re bringing more advanced mobile-entertainment capabilities to more customers, on more devices.  The app is now available on more than 40 mobile devices running Android software v.2.1 or above or that support Wi-Fi.

TV 3.0 2010 Award.JPGFlex View, the new multi-screen (TV-PC-Smartphone) on-demand video entertainment feature on FiOS TV that we introduced a little over a month ago, is already turning heads in the industry.

Recently, at the TV 3.0 - Innovations in TV and Content Delivery Conference in Los Angeles, Flex View won a TV Innovation Award in the on-demand category.  Judged by an independent panel of industry experts and administered by IMS Research, the TV Innovation Awards recognize the most forward-thinking companies shaping the future of television.

Verizon Vice President Eric Bruno accepted the award that honors Verizon’s achievement in providing on-demand video content, at any time, to any place, on the viewer’s chosen device.

Verizon Talks to Beet.TV About Broadband Speed

by Employee ‎12-09-2010 12:34 PM - edited ‎12-09-2010 12:36 PM

From the recent launch of Verizon’s LTE network to the 150/35 Mbps FiOS speeds introduced a few weeks ago, you have heard a lot of news from us about broadband speed, but here at Verizon, we are always looking to the future.

Verizon’s Joe Ambeault recently talked with Beet.TV about speed and why it is important to consumers today and for many years to come. You can watch the video here.

According to Joe, today’s broadband speeds often become an issue for family members when they’re trying to use their Internet connection simultaneously. On smaller connections, they are forced to make compromises whether it’s decreased video quality or decreased download speeds.

‘Bejeweled 3’ Dazzles at Verizon Games

by ‎12-08-2010 03:45 PM - edited ‎12-08-2010 03:47 PM

jason_headshot.JPGIn today’s guest blog post, Verizon Games Product Manager Jason Henderson talks about the much-anticipated next edition in the “Bejeweled” series from Popcap, “Bejeweled 3,” and its availability on Verizon Games.

We’re very excited that Verizon Games is one of a select group of online places where, as of today, you'll be able to find “Bejeweled 3,” the much-anticipated next edition in the “Bejeweled” series from Popcap.

This is a big deal for a lover of games. When we talk about games, there are a lot of ways to slice them, but one really useful way is: hardcore versus casual. You know how when people say games, the first thing that pops in your head is a game controller and something blowing up on a TV screen? That would be what we call hardcore. The other kind, the kind that men and women both play day in and day out, the kind that are easy to pick up and hard to master -- we call those casual. And in casual games, Bejeweled is the reigning champ.

If you subscribe to one of these packages, you may have already noticed the new additions.  The three channels will be available in all FiOS markets by the end of the week.  Here’s what they offer:

There has been plenty of buzz about Verizon’s Flex View, the new service that lets customers buy or rent videos and watch them anytime on any compatible device.

Do you want to know more?

Verizon’s Joe Ambeault recently talked with Beet.TV about Flex View and why it has FiOS TV customers in mind.

There has been a lot of news recently about Flex View, our new “entertainment-on-the-go” addition to FiOS TV. In case you missed it, Flex View lets you buy or rent movies and then view them on your TV, computer and select mobile devices. But why keep all the fun to yourself? Today, we’re launching a Facebook Flex View App that lets users easily share their opinions about Flex View content.

Features of the Flex View Facebook application include the ability to “Like” and comment on Flex View video-on-demand content using any Facebook account.

Thinking About 3D TV? Verizon Has Helpful Resources

by ‎12-02-2010 02:34 PM - edited ‎12-02-2010 02:35 PM

3D TV—do you remember when this technology seemed like light years away? Well, that’s not the case any more, and with prices dropping, more and more of you are adopting 3D.

Citing two research firms, IPTVNews reports that sales of 3D TVs are growing. Interest in 3DTV has more than doubled since January 2010 according to Infogroup/ORC, a global market research group. Additionally, Futuresource Consulting is predicting that global sales of 3DTVs will exceed 4 million this year. Futuresource also predicts that more than 5 million 3DTVs are expected to be sold next year in the US

All This Broadband Speed, So Now What?

by ‎12-01-2010 03:16 PM - edited ‎12-01-2010 03:34 PM

fios copy.jpgIf you missed the sonic boom heard around the broadband world last week, we introduced our newest FiOS Internet speed offer of 150/35 Mbps. The new service has the fastest Internet speeds available to consumers, and it’s 50 times faster than anything our competitors can offer.  Soon, we’ll extend our new fastest Internet service to our small business customers, so stay tuned for more details this month.

Reaction from the news media has been terrific.  CNET said Verizon has been pushing the envelope since we began offering the FiOS service.  Other news outlets like the Associated Press and the Wall Street Journal reported that FiOS, with the addition of the new industry fastest service, claimed the Internet speed crown while leapfrogging past competitors.
