More Interactive Features Now Available for FiOS TV’s Interactive Media Guide

by Employee ‎09-30-2009 01:57 PM - edited ‎12-01-2009 09:50 AM

More Like This VODFiOS TV customers wanted more detailed program information, interactive video-on-demand (VOD), more shortcuts and easier ways to upgrade their FiOS TV, and I’m happy to say the folks in the FiOS lab have come up with some pretty neat responses. Starting now in Texas and California and rolling out in every FiOS market over the next few months, we’re upgrading our Interactive Media Guide to make on-screen purchasing and FiOS TV navigation faster and easier than it has been. With the upgrade, customers can check out the original airing date of a show and cast, along with genre, director, detailed description and more. In an age when programs run more than once and when many folks use DVRs to watch favorite programs regularly, this should make it easier to know whether or not you’ve seen an episode. Read more...

Mark WegleitnerDid you know that every FiOS household has a 175 megabit per second local area network built into it as part of the FiOS service? Have you ever thought about how cool it would be to put applications like home security, medical monitoring or energy management right onto the smart router we install, and then have peripheral devices feed data into those apps wirelessly? Stacey Higginbotham of technology blog GigaOM talked with Verizon SVP of Technology Mark Wegleitner about future FiOS services in a recent interview at the Fiber to the Home Conference in Houston. He started with a look back, to the days when Verizon was deciding to deploy fiber all the way to the home. It was clear, he said, that “copper and coaxial networks wouldn’t – in fact, couldn’t – satisfy” the burgeoning demands of the home TV and Internet consumer. Read more...

Cracking the Code on 100 Mbps for Business

by Employee ‎09-10-2009 02:03 PM - edited ‎09-29-2009 03:20 PM

man and woman biz pic small.JPGIf all the confetti’s been swept up and marching bands sent home, it’s time to reconsider the hoopla around Comcast promising 100 Mbps Internet service to small businesses. In Minnesota. A couple of observations. First, it looks to us like Gizmodo's Adam Frucci cracked the code: “If you're trying to show that you can beat FiOS speeds for more than three times the price, well, nice work. But until the prices are lowered and the tech is proven to work when more than 25 people are using it, I'm not sure what it does for us.” Of course, Verizon has been offering high-speed business services for many years. Internet/TV Trendsetters

supersmallthumb.JPGEver browse the Internet and watch TV simultaneously? (Who…us??) Well, you are apparently part of a trend. A recent Nielsen survey (by way of Ars Technica) reported that 57 percent of U.S. Internet users browse the Internet while watching TV. While relatively common these days, it’s an activity that was largely unheard of in most households just five years ago. On average, these Internet surfers-TV viewers spent about 2 hours and 39 minutes each month doing these activities simultaneously. (Seems way to low to me). Of course, with Verizon FiOS TV you might be doing both these activities without ever opening the lid of your laptop. Read more...

RVU Alliance Aims for Single Server in Home

bulb thumb.JPGIn 1899, the head of the U.S. Patent Office was rumored to have suggested the office be closed because everything that could be invented already had been. He never said that, experts say, and tens of thousands of new patents in the past century have shown the notion to be totally misguided anyway. Back then, Jules Verne foresaw a future filled with exciting devices, although he didn’t predict the Verizon FiOS network or the impact it would have on consumers and cable TV competition. Nor did Verne see the confusion and frustration that can develop as customers try to hook together all their home entertainment gear. Read more...
