After switch to AOL, can only send small e-mail attachments

Message 1 of 11

The title says it all: after completing the switch to AOL, I can only send tiny attachments. Any attachment in the MB size range, and my e-mail just sits in the Outlook outbox, with Outlook reporting "preparing to send/receive" but nothing ever happening. Currently I'm trying to send an e-mail with a 7MB atttachment.

I disabled e-mail scanning from my AV, but that didn't help. Disabled the Norton Firewall, and it didn't help. Disabled Norton Auto-Protect, and it didn't help. I also set my router to No Security, and that didn't help either.

This started when I switched to AOL (following the instructions) because Verizon is abandoning its e-mail service.

Believe your answer is here below as to what is being offered

Problem is most likely in your Outlook settings.

What updates have you done to Outlook since the migration ?

Here are just a few of the benefits you’ll get with AOL Mail:

  • Much more storage space for your email
  • Advanced spam filters
  • Virus protection
  • Email attachments up to 25MB
  • An easy way to manage your email anywhere with the highly rated AOL app
To learn more visit the AOL Mail for Verizon Customers Help page.

Everything else is the same (no recent updates) as before making the switch to AOL, therefore the prime suspect is that it's something related to AOL.

That said, here is the information you asked for:

Operating System: Vista Home Premium SP2 x64

Browser: Pale Moon 27.2.1 x32

E-mail coient: Outlook 2007

Just sent 11.1 Mb of .jpg from my Outlook to my gmail email.

and Forwarded same to my VZ AOL email.

Still believe solution is by fixing your Outlook.

Suggest you go here to research your particular problem

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook_com/forum/oemail

PS: Just got both emails on my iPhone as well.

Thanks for the link, but I looked around widely on that Microsoft site and didn't find anything that helped. I have also fiddled extensively with my Outlook settings to see if any combination of settings will do the trick. Nothing yet.

Have you managed to successfully send OUT a large attachment from a VZ/AOL account in Outlook? If you have, then I'd be curious to know your Outlook settings for the following:

  1. "Require logon using Secure Password Authentication (SPA)" -- is that box checked?
  2. Internet E-mail Settings --> Outgoing Server tab --> "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication" -- do you have that box checked?
  3. Same place, Advanced tab -- What port number are you using for the "Outgoing server (SMTP)": 25, 465, 587, something else (and if so, what)?
  4. Same place -- What did you select for "Use the following type of encrypted connection": None, SSL, TLS, or Auto?

If you've been able to send out large attachments from your VZ account via Outlook, I'll try to replicate your settings and see if they work for me.

If the file you are attaching is bigger than the server allows,

try putting the file in a shared location and sending a link instead.

I presently use Picasa 3 to share vacation albums with family members (even though its been retired by Microsoft)

Picasa is an image organizer and image viewer for organizing and editing digital photos, plus an integrated photo-sharing website.

Thank you for the settings.

I made sure to select the same settings as you have, and sent out a test e-mail. It was successful. I also successfully sent out a regular e-mail (no attachment) to another one of my accounts.

However, when I tried to send a 7MG PDF attachment to the same account, Outlook's "Send/Receive Progress" dialog box just kept saying "Processing," and eventually timed out. Lenghtening the server timeout period from 1 minute to 10 minutes didn't improve matters.

Our posts must have crossed in cyberspace, I just now saw your most recent one about Picasa. (Maybe I'll check that box to e-mail me when there's a reply.)

The other night I did end up putting that PDF in Dropbox and sent out a link for the download. But as you pointed out in your first post, AOL's file size limit is supposed tobe 25MB and this is a 7MB file. So I'm scratching my head as to what's going on. Even set to the same settings as you, I can't send out an e-mail with a large attachment.

Just sent 22 Mb of jpgs from AOL to my gmail, arrived on my iPad and iPhone

found this :

Maximum email size limit for Gmail   Outlook com  Yahoo  AOL

EMAIL PROVIDER

MAXIMUM EMAIL SIZE LIMIT

Gmail

25Mb (per email sent or received)

Outlook.com and Hotmail

10Mb (per file attachment) or 300Gb (only for files attached via SkyDrive!)

Yahoo Mail

25Mb (per email) or unlimited (only for files attached via DropBox – limited by your DropBox account size)

AOL

25Mb (per email sent or received)

Mail.com

50Mb (per attachment) and 10Mb (per file)

Zoho Mail

12Mb (per email) and 10Mb (per file)

GoDaddy Workspace

30Mb (per email) and 20Mb (per file)

EMAIL CLIENT

MAXIMUM EMAIL SIZE LIMIT

Microsoft Outlook

20Mb (per attachment)

Mozilla Thunderbird

unlimited

Windows Live Mail

10Gb (per email) and no more than 50Mb per file attached

Can you bypass these maximum email size limits?

A simple answer would be: no, you can’t bypass these maximum size limits. However, there are workarounds:

– if you are an Outlook user, you can install Weight Diet for Outlook and automatically compress outgoing file attachments, so they have more chances to “fit”;

– you can upload the files-to-be-attached to cloud storage servers (like DropBox, Google Drive or SkyDrive) and include the download link in your email.
