Has anyone gotten gmail to work with the new AOL third party app password?

I can get it to work in Thunderbird but want to use gmail since it's already on my phone
I removed the verizon account & now cannot get it add back in whether I use the AOL pw or the specially generated app password due to a message that makes no sense since I don't have that option checked.
AOL says it's a Google problem
